Malaysia detains 22 Vietnamese sailors on illegal fishing charges

The visit, the first by Mr Sang since he was elected as President of Vietnam in July 2011, takes place at a time when the two countries are celebrating the 35th anniversary of their diplomatic ties this year. The four-year project, which was launched in 2011, aims to improve resilience to climate change impacts for coasts in Southeast Asia, including Can Gio biosphere reserve. Can Gio, the only coastal district of Ho Chi Minh City with mangrove forests covering over 50 percent of its total area, is strong for aquaculture and maritime economy. It was the conclusion of a meeting between representatives from the southern province of Kien Giang and Tanee Sangrat, Deputy General Director of the Department of East Asian Affairs under the Thai Foreign Ministry. Deputy Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Mai Anh Nhin said in recent years the provincial authority has taken measures to prevent fishermen from both sides from illegal fishing operations along maritime border between Vietnam and Thailand. Police officials said the vessels have been towed to the port city of Chon Buri, 100 km south of Bangkok, and that the ships, along with the crewmembers, all believed at this time to be Vietnamese, are under the supervision of Thai authorities. The vessels were intercepted by the Thai coast guard at about 8:00 am on April 2, said Thailand’s Vice Admiral Rungsarit Sattayanukul. The Vietnamese Foreign Ministry’s Consular Department said, on May 30, 2011, seven fishing vessels of Binh Thuan province, BTh 98630TS, BTh 98709TS, BTh 99668TS, BTh 98079TS, BTh 99924TS, BTh 987693TS and BTh 99367TS, with 122 fishermen on board were arrested by the Philippine Navy about 2 nautical miles (3.6km) off Tamburok coast of Balabac, Palawan province of the Philippines. President Sang greets Korean and Philippine counterparts in Vladivostok The two important sessions were held in Vladivostok, Russia on September 9 as part of the APEC summit to discuss food security, innovative growth and the Asia Pacific and global economic situations. The agreement was signed in Hanoi on June 28 by Deputy Minister of Vietnam Agriculture and Rural Development Vu Van Tam and Undersecretary of the Philippines Foreign Affairs Rafael E. Seguis.
