Second mosquito-killing campaign launched The Health Ministry launched a mosquito-killing drive across the country on October 21 in the context of dengue fever spreading in central and southern regions and the discovery of the 7th infection of Zika virus. The campaign, the second of its kind, will be conducted through October and November with the goal of getting local authorities, all agencies and every resident involved in disease prevention measures. The Health Ministry asks provincial health departments to guide locals in how to stop mosquito from breeding by keeping their water containers clean and advise local authorities on imposing administrative fines on individuals and organisations who refuse to take preventive measures against the diseases. Communication work needs to be promoted via mass media and in all daily public activities to raise public awareness about their role in disease prevention. The health sector will strengthen their monitoring and supervision of patients and quarantine work at border gates, while collecting more samples of suspected cases for tests. Zika is mainly transmitted through the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which also carries dengue fever. The virus causes only mild symptoms in most, including fever, sore eyes and a rash. But pregnant women infected with the virus risk giving birth to babies with microcephaly. The Ministry of Health and People's Committee in the southern province of Binh Duong yesterday launched a campaign to kill mosquito larva in An Phu Commune in Thuan An Town of the provine to raise residents' awareness and role of related agencies in combating dengue fever epidemic. Speaking at the launch ceremony of mosquito killing campaign, Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien pointed out that all cities and provinces nationwide have outbreaks of the disease and most serious outbreaks have occured in South and the Central provinces have. The disease develops in the rainy season from April to November. Thanks to concerted efforts of all related agencies and residents, the infections and mortality rate reduced for years; for instance, last year has less number of cases during past 10 years. However, achievement in combating the disease is not stable as expected; hence, it is likely to have outbreaks somewhere if local administrations ad related agencies are not determined in fighting the disease. This year, dengue fever patient count escalated sharply as 2015 is the peak of a four-or-five-year cycle of dengue fever. Related agencies must spray chemicals to kill mosquito and larva. In the meeting, the Ministry called for the participation of the government, unions and sectors and organizations in increasing information of the disease to each resident who have joined hand to prevent the disease by killing mosquito larva - simplest thing to do. 4 killed in road accident in Tra Vinh At least four persons were killed and two injured when two coaches crashed into three motorbikes in Tra Vinh, a Mekong River Delta province, this morning. The accident happened at 10am on Ba Si Bridge in Cang Long district's Phuong Thanh commune when two coaches tried to cross the bridge at the same time and crashed into three motorbikes with two passengers each, the local traffic police reported. Police are further investigating the accident. 15 firefighters suffer injuries in paint store fire Fifteen firefighters were taken to hospital after a chemical box exploded in a fire at a paint store in Hoa Vang district, Da Nang city, yesterday night. The city's firefighting police department said this morning that the fire broke out at about 11pm in Hoa Chau commune, 20km from the city, and the department sent 10 fire trucks to stamp out the fire and rescue local residents living near the store. No one was reported killed. However, a box, which was identified to be containing acetone, suddenly exploded, injuring 15 firemen and damaging a wall of the store. Nine firemen suffered burns. Corporal Truong Van Phuc was the worst affected, as he suffered burns to his arms, face and neck. He also broke an arm. Some firefighters are receiving treatment for burns to the conjunctiva. Figures from the city Preventive Health Center released at a meeting on Wednesday showed that HFMD cases have continued to surge since February, reaching 2,950 cases by the end of April, up 27.7 percent year-on-year. It said 708 new cases of HFMD occurred in April. Measles infections rose from a single case during the first four months last year to more than 1,300 this year; chickenpox jumped three and a half times to 509 cases, and flu 15 times to 258 cases over the same period, the center said. Most of the patients were children under five. Dengue fever infections have dropped from last year to around 100 cases a week, but three children have died. Dr Le Hong Nga from the center said dengue fever infections were concentrated at the low outskirts of District 8, although the district authorities said they noted few mosquito larvae. Dr Nguyen Huu Hung, deputy director of the city Health Department, said at the meeting that health officials should not rely on district government reports since they "are always beautiful." Hung said that according to the disease's regular cycle, HFMD might be making a pandemic comeback this year, following mild infections last year. VietNamNet Bridge - The HCM City Preventive Medicine Centre reported that hand, foot and mouth disease caused three fatalities last month but its incidence has increased sharply since. The number of children contracting the disease in April has doubled since last month. Dr Nguyen Dac Tho, deputy head of the Centre, said last month there were 40 children infected every week and this now has increased to 80. The HCM City Paediatric Hospital No.2 now has 32 children with the disease, 10 per cent with serious complications. Dr Nguyen Chau Viet, head of its infectious diseases department, said the number of patients has doubled since last month when it received 142 patients. One of them died. The first epidemic cluster was discovered in a kindergarten in Tan Binh District after a girl was diagnosed with the disease and died in hospital on March 20. The second cluster was found at Tan Son Nhat Kindergarten, also in Tan Binh District, where three children were found infected. The capital city is third in the country – after HCM City and the central province of Da Nang – with 6,700 dengue patients and three deaths. About 90 per cent of people infected have recovered. In his recent notice on dengue control, the PM asked the People’s Committees of all cities and provinces to assign lower-level governments tasks to prevent the disease in their areas, intensify inspections at high-risk locations and penalise individuals and organisations that fail to take precautions. Notably, he urged increased control of mosquitoes at construction sites and boarding houses which aren’t cleaned regularly, good conditions for mosquito larvae development. The Ministry of Health was assigned to detect sources of infections, take preventive measures and provide training for healthcare workers on treating the disease.  The Ministry of Information and Communications and media agencies were asked to coordinate with the Ministry of Health to update the public on disease development and precautions. There are outbreaks of dengue fever in many countries, including Vietnam where more than 58,000 cases have been reported since the beginning of 2017, with some 49,000 people hospitalised – an increase of 11.2% from the same period last year – and 17 deaths, the notice said. Dengue hotspots include HCM City, Hanoi, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Binh Thuan, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, An Giang, Tra Vinh, Ca Mau, Tay Ninh, Soc Trang, Tien Giang and Nam Dinh, it added.
