Vietnam's military-run telecoms group Viettel said its pre-tax profit from the nine overseas market it currently has a foothold in rose 156 percent on-year to $41 million in the first half of 2017. The huge jump is due to encouraging business climates, new services and strategic projects and favorable exchange rates, according to Viettel Global. Overseas performances Other than established overseas markets such as Laos, Cambodia and East Timor, which all turned a healthy profit, new markets in Peru, Burundi and Haiti were the top contributors to the company's success. During the first six months, total sales in Peru and Burundi increased by 82 percent and 38 percent respectively, exceeding the 29 percent on-year growth recorded in East Timor. Viettel Haiti also bounced back from the strong typhoon in 2016 with 15 percent sales growth in H1. Peru and East Timor were the two most promising markets for Viettel during H1. Pre-tax profit in Peru reached VND405 billion ($18 million), up 132 percent on-year. Meanwhile, the number of subscribers to Telemor, Viettel's carrier in East Timor, jumped 42 percent more than targeted with total sales reached $15 million. Favorable exchange rates Unlike 2016, favorable exchange rates have contributed to a good start to this year. Stronger currencies in Mozambique and Cameroon, together with strict financial controls imposed by their governments, have helped Viettel bag huge profits from these countries. Profits from Peru and Haiti also are expected to gain 3-6 percent thanks to similar conditions. If the rates continue…... [read more]

But the veteran Republican lawmaker, who announced last week he was suffering from brain cancer, nevertheless made a triumphant and emotional return Tuesday, showing glimpses of the fiery passion that has defined his long career. In dramatic style, the maverick McCain made his colleagues wait for it. The other 99 senators erupted in applause and cheers when the 80-year-old strode into the chamber half an hour into an extraordinarily tense showdown over health care reform, walked to the center well and cast the final vote. It was the first time that most had seen McCain since the shock news that the Arizona senator -- who rose to become the 2008 Republican presidential nominee a generation later -- was now facing the fight of his life against an aggressive cancer. He took advantage of the moment to deliver a stern message to his colleagues in the body that has lost many of its bipartisan traditions: shape up, and quick. "We've been spinning our wheels on too many important issues because we keep trying to find a way to win without help from across the aisle," McCain said, as most senators sat listening at their desks -- a respect seldom afforded these days to a lawmaker addressing the body. The latest deliberations are "more partisan, more tribal, more of the time than at any time than I can remember," he said. "I hope we can again rely on humility on our need to cooperate, on our dependence on each other, learn…... [read more]

The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday reported that U.S. President Donald Trump said Apple has promised to expand manufacturing at home with three new U.S. plants. The Journal quoted Trump as saying that Apple chief executive Tim Cook committed to building "three big plants," in the United States. No details were provided, and Apple did not respond to an AFP request for comment. Cook in May announced the creation of an Apple fund to get more people in the U.S. to do "advanced manufacturing," kicking it off with a billion dollars. Apple building plants in the United States would come as rare common ground with Trump. Cook has pointed out that Apple spent more than $50 billion in the United States last year -- buying from suppliers such as Corning Glass, working with developers behind applications for the California company's devices and more. Apple has about 80,000 employees in the U.S. and plans to hire thousands more "in the future," according to Cook. It is a sign of Apple's success but also a thorny problem: a cash stockpile topping a quarter of a trillion dollars, sparking debate on what do with such massive reserves. The tech giant has resisted the idea of bringing the cash home, because the U.S. tax code allows multinational firms to defer profits while they are held overseas but taxes income at up to 35 percent when repatriated. Trump vowed while campaigning that he would force Apple to bring production to U.S. soil. Apple is…... [read more]
