Vietnam-Cambodia friendship monument restored

NDO – A monument dedicated to Cambodian and Vietnamese volunteer soldiers was reinstated in Battambang province, Cambodia on July 27 after undergoing a period of restoration.

Addressing the ceremony, Battambang Governor Chann Sophal said people in Takeo, as well as in Cambodia in general, always keep in mind the enormous support of Vietnam’s voluntary soldiers who helped their country defeat Pol Pot’s genocidal regime in the past and who have contributed to national development at present.

The completed restoration of the friendship monument is evidence of the growing traditional solidarity and amity, he said, calling on younger generations of the two nations to join hands in nurturing the friendship.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State at Cambodia’s Ministry of Cults and Religions Nhem Valy highlighted the flourishing relations between the two nations in recent years, saying that the bilateral ties have entered a new chapter, contributing to peace, cooperation, prosperity and development in the region and the world.

He said that the inauguration of the two works show sound cooperation between the National Council of Solidarity Front for the Development of the Cambodian Motherland and the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence. They also marked the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam-Cambodia diplomatic ties.

For his part, Vietnam’s Defence Attaché Nguyen Anh Dung said the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monument, which has also been built in various other localities throughout Cambodia, is a symbol of the warm sentiment, solidarity, bravery and sacrifice of the people and armies of Vietnam and Cambodia.

It also serves to express respect and appreciation for volunteer Vietnamese soldiers and those of the Cambodian Royal Army who laid down their lives for independence, freedom and prosperity of both nations, he added.

The restoration is part of a project to repair Vietnam-Cambodia friendship monuments in Cambodia. The project is funded by Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defence and carried out in coordination with the Solidarity Front for Development of the Cambodian Motherland.
