Vietnam, Cambodia tighten traditional friendship, multi-faceted cooperation

Vietnamese Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong’s visit to Cambodia from July 20 to 22 is considered a move to boost the unbreakable ties between the two nations.

General Secretary Trong joined talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh on Thursday afternoon to discuss the Vietnam-Cambodia relationship, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

PM Hun Sen considered Trong’s visit as historically significant to the sound neighborliness and time-honored traditional friendship between the two parties, governments, and peoples.

The two leaders agreed that achievements attained over the past five decades of diplomatic ties serve as an important foundation for the two countries to take their relationship to the next level.

The current visit, as well as PM Hun Sen’s recent trip to Vietnam, is seen as a means of boosting the traditional friendship and multi-faceted cooperation of two sides.

Both sides reached a consensus to step up the connection between the two economies on a win-win basis, focusing on bringing the value of bilateral trade relating to infrastructure, energy, tourism, agriculture, and forestry to US$5 billion prior to 2025.

Both governments will provide favorable conditions for local businesses to operate and invest, while collaboration will also be carried out to improve education, training, and human resource skills to meet demands for development and global integration.

Regarding border issues, the leaders pledged to respect and fully implement agreements signed between both countries, agreeing to soon complete the installation of border markers to create a peaceful, friendly, cooperative, and sustainable border area.

PM Hun Sen promised to continue assisting the Vietnamese community in Cambodia.

Following the conversation, Trong and his host witnessed the signing of several cooperative documents, including a joint statement on enhancing the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia.

Earlier the same day, the Vietnamese Party chief convened a meeting with Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni.
