Vietnam, Laos border localities foster procuracy cooperation

NDO – The fifth conference between the People’s Procuracies of Vietnam and Laos’ border provinces was held in Hoi An city, Quang Nam province on July 18 under the theme ‘Promoting cooperation in combating drug trafficking’.

The event was co-chaired by Prosecutor General Le Minh Tri of the Vietnamese Supreme People’s Procuracy, and his Lao counterpart Khamsame Souvong.

Addressing the conference, Prosecutor General Le Minh Tri said that cooperation between the People’s Procuracies of the two countries’ border provinces have gained encouraging achievements since their fourth conference, which was held in October 2015 in Luang Prabang, Laos.

The two sides have given priority to training personnel, combating drug crimes, and enhancing information sharing and experience exchanges to broaden their coordination in suppressing crime. The anti-drug agencies of the two countries have closely coordinated to uncover many major drug rings in border areas.

The two sides have also actively, positively and responsibly taken part in the building of the ASEAN Community, and raising the awareness of their prosecutors on the role and position of each ASEAN member nation as well as the importance of the establishment of the ASEAN Community.

The two supreme procuracies have made significant contributions to building and perfecting their respective country’s legal systems in order to facilitate the regional and international integration.

For his part, Lao Prosecutor General Khamsame Souvong stressed that transnational crime, particularly drug traffickers, are a threat to social safety and order as well as the stability of the national economy.

Cooperation between the People’s Procuracies of Vietnam and Laos’ border provinces have significantly contributed to the fight against transnational crime, and the building of a shared borderline of peace, friendship and development, he said.

Delegates at the conference reviewed current shortcomings and obstacles in implementing joint action plans between the two countries’ procuracy sectors and suggested orientations to forester bilateral cooperation in the coming time. They agreed to host the sixth conference in Laos in 2019.
