Vietnam, Thailand boost political-security cooperation

NDO – A Vietnamese delegation, led by Deputy Minister of Public Security, Senior Lieutenant General Bui Van Nam, is participating in the ninth meeting of the Vietnam-Thailand Joint Working Group on Political-Security Cooperation, taking place in Bangkok from July 16-19.

The working trip to Thailand is made at the invitation of the Thai delegation headed by General Thawip Netniyom, Secretary-General of Thailand’s Security Council.

The meeting takes place as Vietnam and Thailand successfully held activities to mark the 40th anniversary of their diplomatic relations (1976-2016) and have accelerated the action programme on their strategic bilateral partnership for 2014-2018.

The event is also part of activities in preparation for the upcoming visit to Thailand by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in August.

At the meeting, the two sides shared their views on regional and international issues that have an impact on security in each country, while evaluating their cooperation in politics and security. Both sides affirmed their commitments to not permit any individuals or organisations to make use of the territory of one country to harm the other.

They reviewed the implementation of the joint working group’s programme, for the 2016-2018 period, in combating transnational crimes such as illegal immigration, human trafficking, terrorism, money laundering, cyber-crime and international economic crime, as well as reviewing their cooperation in defence, law enforcement and justice, and other related matters.

The two sides discussed and proposed measures to deal with problems related to fishermen, fishing boats and other violations at sea, in the spirit of humanity and the strategic partnership. They also agreed to organise the 10th meeting of the Vietnam-Thailand Joint Working Group on Political-Security Cooperation in Vietnam in 2018.

During their stay in Thailand, Sen. Lieut. Gen. Bui Van Nam paid a courtesy call to General Prawit Wongsuwan, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister of Thailand.

The Vietnamese delegation also visited the Memorial House for President Ho Chi Minh in Bangkok and held meetings with representatives of the Overseas Vietnamese Association in Thailand and a number of overseas Vietnamese families in Nakhon Phanom.
