2017 ASEAN Song, Dance and Music Festival commences

The event was co-organized by Thailand- Vietnam Enterprises Association, Kashikom Bank of Thailand, the Ministry of Planning and Investment of Vietnam and Vietnam Embassy to Thailand with the participation of 500 firms of the countries. At the forum, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that the two- way trade turnover of Vietnam and Thailand reached more than US$ 12.5 billion after four years of the establishment of the strategic partnership ties. Thailand has had around 470 investment projects into Vietnam with total capital of over US$ 8 billion so far. In the tourism sector, around 830, 000 Vietnamese travelers had arrived in Thailand, and Vietnam had attracted nearly 270,000 tourists from Thailand. He said that Vietnam has been promoting Merge and Acquisition ( M& A) activities in combination with state-owned enterprises equalization in the fields of transport, infrastructure,food, agriculture, telecommunications, trade and services,tourism and construction… The country also continues encouraging startup activities between domestic and global enterprises and creating advantages for foreign investors into the market.   At the meeting with Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, both sides discussed about organizing of annual and once in two year-meetings to solve difficulties for investors and other issues. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc arrives in Bangkok to start a three-day official visit to Thailand (Source: VNA) Bangkok (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, his spouse and a high-level Vietnamese delegation arrived in Bangkok on August 17 afternoon to begin a three-day official visit to Thailand. Phuc is scheduled to hold talks with his Thai counterpart Prayut Chan-ocha and meet with senior officials as well as receive the Thailand-Vietnam Friendship Association’s officials and visit the Embassy of Vietnam in Thailand. In Bangkok, the PM will address an opening ceremony of the Vietnam-Thailand business forum and attend the Vietnamese goods week at the Lad Prao trade centre. He is expected to host leaders of leading Thai businesses. Funded by the European Union (EU), the 2017-2021 project aims to strengthen voices of non-State sectors, including civil social organisations, local residents and communities, to improve sustainable forest governance in the region.  Speaking at the event, Deputy Director of the Centre for People and Nature (PanNature) Hoang Xuan Thuy said the project covers Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam with the goal of empowering and connecting non-State sectors, monitoring and responding appropriately to strengthening forest governance, particularly in the EU Action Plan for forest law enforcement, governance and trade – Voluntary Partnership Agreements (FLEGT-VPA) and REDD (Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation).  By 2019, forest governance supervisory systems will be piloted and spread while an information sharing platform among regional countries will be launched for the effort.  Deputy Director General of the Administration of Forestry Nguyen Van Ha lauded the efforts of civil social organisations, local residents and communities to the success of the country’s forestry development strategy until 2020.  Over the past years, the forestry sector has helped with environment protection, climate change response and raising forest coverage from 32% in 1998 to 41.19% in 2016. The PM said he will lead a high-level Government delegation to visit Thailand from August 17-19 to exchange measures to promote bilateral friendship and cooperation, and increase the two countries’ strategic partnership. Thailand is No.1 candidate for the gold medal at the sport event and the Vietnamese national women’s futsal team lost to Thailand in the previous three finals.  Coach Truong Quoc Tuan said the Vietnamese girls once beat Thai rivals at the AFF Futsal Club Championship in 2015 and hoped that such achievement will support them to win big at this year’s event. The coaching board has made meticulous preparations for the team, in both tactics and psychology, Tuan stressed. Lao Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith said August 8 is a significant and historical day to all ASEAN member nations as it marks the development of a regional organisation, which was established to strengthen cooperation in the spirit of equality, building peace, stability, development and prosperity in the region and beyond. Despite difficulties and challenges over the past 50 years, ASEAN has gradually evolved and gained solid achievements to become an organisation connecting regional countries, which was recognised by the international community, he said. Being an official member of ASEAN from 1997, Laos has made active contributions to the building of the ASEAN Community, bringing pragmatic benefits to Laos and ASEAN in general, he added. The Patousai Arch of Laos was lit up on August 8 to mark ASEAN’s 50th birthday and 20 years since the country joined the ten-member group, attracting 200 officials in charge of ASEAN affairs of Lao ministries and agencies and representatives of embassies in Laos, among others. This is part of the ASEAN Landmark Lighting event, an initiative of the Philippines - ASEAN Chair 2017 - aiming to raise public awareness of ASEAN.  Major sites in ASEAN member countries were lit up red, blue and yellow or decorated with the bloc’s icon. Addressing the lighting ceremony, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office Alounkeo Kittikhoun said ASEAN has focused on intensifying regional connectivity and building the ASEAN Community, which officially took shape on December 31, 2015. About 230 artworks by 136 photographers in the 10 ASEAN countries -- Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam -- are on display during the event, allowing visitors to explore the peoples, cultures and landscapes in the region.  The photos displayed at the exhibtion were selected from 10,000 entries of 1,200 amateur and professional photographers from ASEAN member nations who took part in the photo contest launched by the Department of Art, Photography and Exhibitions under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
