The 5th term of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) has seen a tough time caused by devastating economic crisis. VCCI is proud to complete all tasks, but cannot hide concerns for unfinished work. The upcoming sixth term of VCCI promises to open up a lot of opportunities, but also to bring numerous challenges. Vietnam Business Forum interviewed Mr Nguyen Quoc Binh, Member of the Executive Board of VCCI's 5th term and CEO of Hanel Co., Ltd, on this issue. Hoang Tham reports. How do you assess VCCI's role of uniting and supporting businesses in the fifth term? VCCI plays an important role in the business community. This is convincingly evidenced by its ability to attract and gather member businesses across the nation with more than 100,000 companies being direct and indirect members. Especially, most of the biggest companies and business associations in the country are VCCI members. The fifth term of VCCI (2008-2013) is the "baptism of fire" of the entire economy of the country as well Vietnamese businesses in particular. However, this tough time has become an accurate measurement for enterprises' performances in general and VCCI operations in particular as the representative for legitimate rights and interests of enterprises and the bridge that connects the business community. Amid economic downturn, operating budgets for business associations, including VCCI, were cut down. But, VCCI still successfully organised many practical programmes and activities like annual meetings for the Prime Minister and business leaders, Vietnam Economic Forum, Vietnam Business Forum…... VietNamNet Bridge – In the southeast region, a curious phenomenon of foreign direct investment firms ‘recommending’ long-time employees to resign has cropped up. In return, these employees receive a hefty one-time payment. Workers assemble small-sized electric motors at the Japan-owned Mabuchi Motor Viet Nam at the Bien Hoa II Industrial Park in Dong Nai Province. — Photo: VNA/VNS  The companies don’t force the workers to resign but merely recommend it, and the workers consent, making the practice perfectly legal. However, workers might not be aware that by doing so, they relinquish many of their rights, and some are urging authorities to get involved. Nguyen Thi Sen, 51, from Bien Hoa City of Dong Nai Province, worked at Pouchen Viet Nam – a manufacturing factory of the Taiwan-based sportswear company – for nearly 18 years. At the end of last year, the company announced that workers with tenure of 15 years or longer may receive a lump sum equal to 12 months of salary if they quit. Sen is still four years from retirement age, and under the company’s policy, she would receive one-month salary as a bonus every year. However, thinking the one-time payment was a generous amount, Sen agreed to end her contract and social security, and received VND 140 million (US$6,160). “Now I regret my decision. Previously, my monthly salary plus bonus was VND 10 million ($440), so my annual income would total VND 150 million ($6,600), including the New Year bonus,” Sen told Vietnam News Agency. “The…... ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh (Source: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh highlighted the bloc’s milestones during its 50 years of existence in an interview with Vietnam News Agency. Minh told reporters that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established in 1967 with only five members, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines. The purpose at that time was to deal with security-related risks amid the Cold War and the anti-US war in Indochina. The bloc then admitted Brunei in 1984, Vietnam in 1995, Laos and Myanmar in 1997 and Cambodia in 1999. These moves completed its initial target of connecting all Southeast Asian countries which are diverse in political institution, economic structure, cultural identity, language and religion. In 2003, the bloc issued the Declaration of ASEAN Concord II identifying the objective of establishing an ASEAN Community with three pillars of politics-security, economics and culture-society, Minh said, adding that the ASEAN Charter in 2007 created a legal foundation and institution framework for strengthening regional connectivity and for establishing the ASEAN Community in 2015. The most important milestone in ASEAN’s history was the establishment of the ASEAN Community in December 2015 and the launch of the ASEAN Vision 2025 towards a self-reliant, legal-binding and people –centered community on January 1, 2016, he added. [ASEAN – a rare sub-region organisation of solidarity: Deputy PM] Mechanisms including the ASEAN Regional Forum, East Asia Summit and Asia Plus Three are…... [read more]

VietNamNet Bridge – Quite a few transport projects in Ha Noi’s rural areas are not up to scratch due to lack of capital and difficulties in disbursing investments. A temporary bridge across the Day River in My Duc District, Ha Noi. — Photo hanoimoi.com.vn Nguyen Duc Toan, deputy head of the transport infrastructure management division under Ha Noi’s Department of Transport, told the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) that the rural transportation system lacks water drainage systems, signs and technical infrastructure. The system of roads across fields satisfies local economic development, but it needs continuous improvement. Many localities invest in rural areas’ transport based on the current situation, not on planning. Toan said transportation system investment in Ha Noi’s rural areas lacks comprehensiveness, only focusing on road upgrades but not on building new roads and replacing weak and temporary bridges. Vu Hoang, vice president of the Ha Noi Road and Bridge Association, told VNA that the rural transport system has yet to meet the requirements of agricultural production. The roads in some places are so narrow that trucks cannot enter the fields. This, in turn, increases production costs and product prices. For many years, residents of My Duc, Ung Hoa, Soc Son, Chuong My, Thanh Oai districts have had to cross degraded bridges, resulting in a drownings at My Luong floating bridge in Chuong My District in July 2015 and at Seu Market floating bridge crossing Ung Hoa and My Duc districts in June 2016.
