HCMC must tap into potential to achieve rapid and sustainable growth

Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan was speaking at the 11th meeting of the city’s Party Organisation (10th tenure) on August 18. He highlighted the significance of the event as it is a time to evaluate the implementation of the Resolution adopted at the 10th Congress of the municipal Party Organisation as well as seek solutions to fuel economic growth. The city will map out three detailed plans to realise three resolutions on economy approved at the fifth plenary meeting of the 12th Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee from now to the year’s end, he said. Besides achievements over the past five years, HCM City needs to address some shortcomings in economic growth and infrastructure development, he added. During the two-day conference, participants will discuss a project building HCM City into a smart city in 2017-2020, with a vision to 2025 and hear reports on developing private economies, improving the institution of the socialist-oriented market economy, and restructuring, reforming and improving the operational efficiency of State businesses. NDO – Leaders of Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, People’s Council, People’s Committee and Vietnam Fatherland Front, on August 19, paid tribute to late President Ton Duc Thang at his Museum in District 1, on the occasion of the 129th anniversary of the leader’s birth (August 20-1888-2017). The delegation was led by Politburo member and Secretary of the City’s Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan. The delegates remembered the great contributions made by late President Ton Duc Thang to the nation’s revolutionary cause. Following the incense offering ceremony, the delegates visited the exhibition themed ’15 years in Con Dao prison’ where the late President was detained. Comrade Ton Duc Thang was born in An Giang province on August 20, 1888, to a family with a rich tradition of patriotism. He joined the patriotic struggle when he was very young and soon became one of the pioneers of the working class and national liberation movements, significantly contributing to worker’s movements throughout the world. During his 15 years in Con Dao prison (1930-1945), he became a spiritual leader to the political prisoners at the prison. After the success of the August Revolution in 1945, he was released from the prison and comrade Ton Duc Thang joined hands with the Party, people and army to build a people’s democratic administration in order to complete the cause of national liberation. The zone, located in Van Don District, has a total land area of 581.13sqkm, a sea area of 1,620sqkm and a population of around 46,000. The district lies in a politically and economically important region, on the strategic transit route from East Asia to Southeast Asia and from ASEAN to China, in the Viet Nam-China “two corridors, one belt” co-operation area, in the Nanning-Singapore economic corridor, and in the extended Tonkin Gulf inter-regional co-operation area. Van Don is one of the three special administrative-economic zones designated by a government-approved plan; the other two are Van Phong in the central province of Khanh Hoa and Phu Quoc in the southern province of Kien Giang. These zones will pilot key new economic and administrative policies before they are applied nationwide, to develop the maritime economy. Vietnamese and Lao children hold hands (Photo: VNA) Dak Lak (VNA) – Officials of Dak Lak, on August 16, received delegations of Vietnamese and Lao children who are taking part in a friendship summer camp in the Central Highlands province. At the reception, Vice Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Tran Quoc Cuong said exchange activities among children from both nations have fostered traditional relationship and comprehensive cooperation between the two parties, governments and people. NDO – Construction of technical infrastructure for a new urban area in the north of Cam River in the port city of Hai Phong officially began at a ceremony on August 17. The project, which has a total investment of nearly VND10 trillion, is expected to be in place for 24 months. The project consists of four main items including technical infrastructure systems for the urban area in the north of Cam river; main traffic systems of the urban area (total length of around 9.958 kilometres); the dyke in the left side of Cam river (length of over 2,000 metres) and Hoang Van Thu bridge with length of over 1,138 metres. Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, Secretary of Hai Phong city’s Party Committee Le Van Thanh emphasised that the projects are a major and important policy to implement the Politburo’s Resolution and Prime Minister’s Decision as well as meeting the aspiration of the local Party, government and people, in building and developing Hai Phong towards modernisation, and stabilisation. With the construction of the new urban area, Hai Phong strives to become a type-1 city and a modern centre at the central level.
