Visitors at the exhibition (Photo: VNA) Can Tho (VNA) – The museum of the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho and the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) on August 8 jointly held a photo exhibition to celebrate the 50th founding anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The exhibition, which will run until September 30, features 120 photos introducing the establishment and development of the association, along with the socio-economic achievements as well as national cultural identity of Vietnam in the ASEAN community. Via the lens of VNA reporters, important events throughout ASEAN’s five-decade development are highlighted, including the first ASEAN Environment Forum in Hanoi in September 1999, the opening of the Conference of ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information in October 2000 in Hanoi and the 34th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Hanoi in July 2001. Director of the Can Tho Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Tran Viet Phuong said that the event is part of activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN and 72 years of the August Revolution (August 19), and the National Day (September 2). VietNamNet Bridge – A taxi driver in Da Nang has been fired after a tourist reported being overcharged for a short trip in the city last week. Representatives of Da Nang’s Taxi Association and agencies hold a meeting about the overcharging suffered by a tourist in the city.  Director of Hai Van Taxi Firm, Doan Trung Lam, said the company decided to fire the driver for his unprofessional behaviour towards a foreign passenger on August 4. The driver was also forced to pay the company VND2 million (US$88.4) for the negative impact his actions had on the company’s reputation. Lam said the driver took a Korean tourist from Da Nang International Airport to a hotel on An Thuong 26 Street in Ngu Hanh Son District. The 6km route should have cost VND50,000 ($2.2) plus a VND10,000 (44 cents) airport fee. However, the driver charged the tourist a total of VND700,000 ($31). The passenger complained to the hotel receptionist, and a report was sent to the director of the city’s transport department. A representative from the taxi firm apologised to the tourist at the hotel and offered her a free tour around the city as way of compensation. During a meeting on Monday, chairman of the city’s Taxi Association, Vo Thanh Nhan, said incidents of overcharging were rare in the city, and the driver received a heavy fine for his actions. Viettel has increased broadband speed for free for all its subscribers nationwide. — Photo courtesy of Viettel Military-run telecom group Viettel today announced that it was increasing its broadband speed for free for all its subscribers nationwide. So far, this is the largest increase in speed in Viettel’s broadband services. All Viettel subscribers, both current and new, who use its fibre optic cable services will enjoy 20 to 50 per cent higher speed. Customers using the 10Mbps package will get 15Mbps, while those using 10-30Mbps will get an added 5Mbps. Earlier, Viettel had increased its broadband speed for customers in Ha Noi, HCM City, Da Nang, Khanh Hoa and Dien Bien. Higher speed will improve the quality of internet service and applications, especially for television, video, e-learning and online games. It will also raise the country’s average internet speed. A report from Akmai CDN, the US content delivery network (CDN) and cloud services provider, shows that the average internet speed in Viet Nam in the first quarter of 2017 was 9.5Mbps, which puts the country in the ninth position in the Asia-Pacific region. Viettel has also introduced the Safenet service to help subscribers using its fibre optic services put content control in place, which helps create a healthier internet environment for children. — VNS ... Foreign investors are rushing to open convenience store chains in Vietnam, which is forecast to become the fastest-growing convenience store market in Asia by 2021. Last week, the Republic of Korea (ROK)’s GS Retail announced plans to launch the first GS25 convenience store in Ho Chi Minh City this year. GS Retail and SonKim Group established a joint venture last month. “We chose Vietnam as our first overseas market because its economy is growing very rapidly these days and those aged 35 or younger make up about 57% of its population,” said a GS Retail’s representative. “Our business in Vietnam is expected to lead to an annual profit of tens of billions of won, including royalties and dividend income.” GS Retail’s future targets include China and Cambodia. This movement is part of the search for growth opportunities in the ongoing global market penetration of the Korean convenience stores. The size of the market topped 10 trillion won (US$8.9 billion) in 2011 and reached 20.4 trillion won (US$18.16 billion) last year. FamilyMart, B’s mart, Circle K, and Vinmart+ are the best known convenience store names in the Vietnamese market. However, the market is expected to become even more crowded with the arrival of Japanese giant 7-Eleven, part of the Seven&I Holding Group. 7-Eleven, which opened its first store in Ho Chi Minh City two months ago, aims to launch at least 100 stores in Vietnam’s largest cities within the next three years. They have been charged with abusing positions and power while being on duty and irresponsibility causing serious consequences. Of the 14 accused, ten are former leaders and officials of Dong Tam commune including four People’s Committee chairmen Nguyen Van Son, Le Dinh Thuan, Nguyen Van Bot and Nguyen Van Duc, Party Committee secretary Nguyen Tien Trien, police chief Nguyen Van Minh, accountant Nguyen Van Khang, head of financial board Bui Van Dung, cadastral official Nguyen Xuan Truong and commune’s military commander Bui Van Hong. Four others are officials of My Duc district including Natural Resources and Environment Department’s head Pham Huu Sach, director of Land Registration Office Dinh Van Dung, deputy director Bach Van Dong and office cadre Tran Trung Tan. Six lawyers participated in defending the accused. Although 15 out of 19 people summoned to the court were absent, the jury board still decided to continue the hearing. According to indictment, offenders including Nguyen Van Bot, Nguyen Van Son, Le Dinh Thuan and Nguyen Tien Trien illegally allocated land and legalize illicitly encroached land plots for some households to make personal profit. Nguyen Van Bot and Nguyen Xuan Truong directly handed over land plots with the total area of 4,100 square meters to 39 out of 49 households. They included three former Chairmen of the Dong Tam commune People’s Committee who are Nguyen Van Son, Le Dinh Thuan and Nguyen Van Bot. A former secretary of the commune’s Party Committee - Nguyen Tien Trien -, and a former commune official in charge of land registration - Nguyen Xuan Truong – are also among the group. Meanwhile, four others were charged with “irresponsibility causing serious consequences” in line with Article 285 of the Penal Code. The authorities of Dak Nong Province are calling for the government to complete a road which is causing huge travel problems. Road to Doan Ket Village Party Secretary of Dak Ngo Commune Le Van Minh said rains had been falling almost non-stop for the past month there, worsening the road. Doan Ket Village is the most remote village of Dak Ngo and often isolated during rainy season as the only dirt road to the outside becomes so muddy that people can hardly use it. The village was established 10 years ago and most villagers are from Mong Ethnic group.   Lau Thi Sang lost her newborn baby because of this road. Her waters broke on August 6 so the family tried to bring her to the hospital. 30 minutes later, they returned home as it was impossible to use the muddy road. "She immediately gave birth at home but the child died," said Lau Sau Vu, Sang's father-in-law. "At first, we used a truck but it got stuck so we transferred her to a motorbike. It also got stuck."   About 10 people died each year because they were unable to reach the hospital on time, a large number of them are children under six. Head of the village Trang A Do the villagers only go to the hospital when they are severely ill and the muddy road made it worse.
