LONDON: New Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata turned down a move to Tottenham Hotspur because he feared the competition from striker Harry Kane, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has claimed. Spain forward Alvaro Morata has joined Premier League side Chelsea from Real Madrid. (Photo: AFP/Franck Fife) Morata, 24, joined champions Chelsea from Real Madrid last month for a reported fee of £58 million (US$76.8 million, €64.7 million). Pochettino spoke to Morata about a move to Spurs two years ago and said the Spain international was deterred by the presence of the prolific Kane at White Hart Lane. "Morata talked about myself, in the media he said: 'Mauricio called me.' That was two years ago or more," Pochettino said, in comments published by several British newspapers on Wednesday. "He said to me: 'Why do you want me if you have Harry Kane?'" Unlike their Premier League title rivals, Spurs are yet to make a significant close-season signing and the new campaign is just over a week away. Spurs have mounted stirring title challenges in both of the past two campaigns and Pochettino said the strength of his first XI was deterring potential new recruits. "You know, if you go to try to sign a striker, they will say: 'Eh gaffer, you want me for what? To be on the bench?' I can't compete with Harry Kane or Hugo Lloris or different players,'" he…... Top Vietnamese female swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien will compete in 10-12 categories with the aim of earning 8-10 gold medals at the upcoming 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, according to Dinh Viet Hung, general secretary of the Vietnam Aquatic Sports Association (VASA). “We will adjust Vien’s competition categories when the Games begin. It depends on the schedule and real situation. The tournament rules allow us to reduce the competition categories of athletes, not increase them,” said Hung. At the 28th Games held in Singapore two years ago, Vien registered for 19 events. However, she only participated in 13 events to focus on her favourite races. Vien, 20, took home eight gold, one silver and one bronze medal to become one of the best performers at the 28th Games, behind only Singapore’s Joseph Isaac Schooling, who claimed gold in all nine disciplines he participated in. To prepare for the Games, Vien took part in the recent FINA World Swimming Championships in Hungary but didn’t perform well. She failed in the qualifying round of her strong categories – the women’s 400m medley and 200m medley. However, Hung said Vien and the other Vietnamese swimmers will not be focusing on the poor result. “Vien’s goal is the Games in Malaysia,” said Hung. “It is not easy to win gold medals in a tournament which has high competition such as the regional sport event. Coach Hoang Anh Tuan and Vien will have to calculate carefully to partake in the chosen divisions, not affecting physical…... [read more]

Each element helps define quan họ, give it life and meaning, and the resulting harmony is so much more than just a beautiful song. Source VNA ... [read more]
