Man turns rooftop into dance floor in southern Vietnam

The Mekong Delta city of Cần Thơ is promoting community tourism on Cồn Sơn Islet in Bình Thủy District. Situated in the Hậu River, a tributary of the Cửu Long (Mekong), the 67ha islet attracts tourists with its serene setting, fresh air, fruit orchards, floating houses, and delicious traditional southern cakes made by locals. It is 600 metres from the river bank and takes only five minutes by boat from Cô Bắc boat station. According to Phan Thị Nguyệt, deputy chairwoman of the Bình Thủy District People’s Committee, 74 households live on the islet, earning their livelihoods from farming and tourism. Fifteen of them offer community tourism services to tourists such as catching fish in ponds, making cakes together with their hosts, visiting fruit orchards and homestay. The third APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting and related meetings (SOM 3), slated for August 18-30 in Ho Chi Minh City, will continue accelerating the implementation of cooperation contents of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). SOM 3 will also work on priorities approved at SOM 1 and SOM 2 while setting forth the content and program of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week scheduled in the central city of Da Nang in November this year. Dragon Capital and VinaCapital have completed the purchase of a 30 per cent stake, equaling six million shares, in FPT Retail, aiming to plunge deeper in the retail sector in general and the mobile retail sector in particular.     The two investors bought 30 per cent of FPT Retail's stakes Managing director of VinaCapital Andy Ho told NDH that VinaCapital prioritises pouring capital into the Vietnamese retail sector. Besides, mobile phone sales are currently having a great development potential because of the increasing demand in Vietnam. Thus, VinaCapital decided to invest in FPT Retail, a leading Vietnamese retailer. Vu Huu Dien, investment director of Dragon Capital, stated, “Vietnam is considered one of the most attractive retail markets on the world with a population of nearly 100 million and retail revenue of more than $110 billion. With the professionalism of FPT Retail’s management team as well as the leadership’s experience in running the operations, FPT Retail will definitely go far in the retail sector.” This deal is a part of FPT Corporation’s plan to divest from FPT Retail, reducing its stakes from 85 to less than 50 per cent. Press conference to announce plans for the aquaculture 2017 show in Can Tho. — VNS Photo Thu Ngan The country’s premier international aquaculture industry show, Aquaculture Viet Nam 2017, will take place in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta Province of Can Tho in late October with an expected 4,000 visitors. Seventy per cent of around 120 companies at the exhibition will be from Viet Nam, with the rest from other countries. Aquaculture companies, especially those from the Mekong Delta, will introduce their brands and products to partners and consumers, while farmers will have a chance to update their knowledge and seek markets and technologies. The Vietnamese winners of the tender which the Philippines held under a government-to-private importation to replenish its dwindling buffer stocks are Vietnam Southern Food Corp, Gia International Corp, Tan Long Group JSC and Hiep Loi Food JSC. Nguyen Thanh Tho, a rice trader at Ba Dac wholesale market in Tien Giang Province, told the Daily on August 8 that IR 50404 material rice sells for VND7,300-7,400 a kilo, up VND100-150 compared to July 25, while its finished rice fetches VND8,400-8,500 a kilo, up VND100-200. Local traders purchase IR 50404 fresh rice at VND5,000-5,100 a kilo on the farm, up VND200-300. Likewise, broken rice is sold at VND6,900-7,000 at Ba Dac market. The four winning bidders will deliver 120,000 tons to the National Food Authority of the Philippines within this month, resulting in an upsurge in domestic demand for IR 50404, according to Nguyen Thanh Phong, director of Van Loi Corporation in Tien Giang Province. In regard to a Government Office correspondence issued on August 4 to fix problems with BOT road toll stations, Deputy Minister Nhat told the Daily on August 7 that the Transport Ministry intends to submit the plan to the Government for consideration later this week. Nhat said the ministry asked relevant agencies to look into BOT road toll stations nationwide, and work with investors and local governments. The plan is not intended to solve problems with some tollgates which have prompted protests among road users. But instead, it would apply to all toll stations in the country, he noted. The correspondence requires the Transport Ministry, other relevant ministries and local authorities to instruct the Vietnam Directorate for Roads, and developers of BOT roads to seek workable solutions to issues at BOT tollgates in order to balance the interests of the State, investors and road users.
