Philippines hosts grand celebration of ASEAN’s 50th founding anniversary

Vietnam successfully fulfilled its role as rotational Chairman of the ASEAN Committee in Paris (ACP) from April to July, according to Vietnamese Ambassador to France Nguyen Ngoc Son. The Vietnamese Embassy also chaired and participated in events like the ASEAN Family Day so as to boost mutual understanding and solidarity among the staff of the ASEAN countries’ embassies in Paris, Son said. He noted his embassy chaired the ACP amid France’s presidential and legislative elections, along with preparations for marking the 50th founding anniversary of ASEAN such as the anniversary celebration, a workshop on ASEAN’s economy and an ASEAN film week in Paris. NDO - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has affirmed Vietnam’s determination to join other members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in building a united, self-reliant ASEAN Community when delivering a speech on Vietnam Television for the occasion of the association’s 50th founding anniversary (August 8, 1967-2017). In his speech, the Vietnamese Government leader noted with pleasure that with five initial members, ASEAN has grown up into a Community with 10 members which have seen significant achievements in politics, economy, institutional development, and intra-bloc connection. He further emphasised that “ASEAN common house” has also been established as a successful model of regional linkage. He stated that throughout historical ups and downs, beyond its expectation, ASEAN has helped turn the situation in the Southeast Asian region from confrontation and mutual suspicion to co-operation, from division to unity, with its pinnacle being the establishment of the ASEAN Community. The Prime Minister further highlighted that ASEAN has become the world’s sixth largest economy as the regional bloc already has a combined gross domestic product (GDP) of US$ 3 trillion a year.
