Representatives of the 21 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies discussed investment in dynamic and healthy aging for sustainable growth at a multilateral forum opened in Ho Chi Minh City on August 15. The 250 participants were parliamentarians, government officials, experts, researchers and businesspersons from the APEC economies and international organisations. The forum took place on the sidelines of the third APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting and related meetings. Chairing the event’s opening session, Vietnamese Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien said population change is currently one of the biggest demographic changes in the world with the rapid growth rate of old people, generating major opportunities and challenges and impacting all economic and social aspects of each country, community and family. The forum allowed policy makers, management officials, scientists and relevant parties to seek solutions and concrete and practical actions to invest in dynamic and healthy aging towards sustainable development in each economy and prosperity in Asia-Pacific. NDO – It cannot be denied that tourism promotion contributes significantly to the good growth of tourism of Vietnam's tourism in recent years. However, the field is facing many difficulties due to low professionalism, limited funding. Since the beginning of the year, Vietnam has welcomed nearly 7.5 million international visitors, up 29% over the same period last year. The total revenue from tourism was estimated at over VND307 trillion, up 26%. With this growth, Vietnam tourism industry is expected to achieve 30% growth in international visitor arrivals in 2017. The third APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting and related meetings (SOM 3), slated for August 18-30 in Ho Chi Minh City, will continue accelerating the implementation of cooperation contents of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). SOM 3 will also work on priorities approved at SOM 1 and SOM 2 while setting forth the content and program of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week scheduled in the central city of Da Nang in November this year. There will be 75 meetings of four committees, 38 working groups and sub-groups on trade liberalization and investment, business preference,  economic network, overall development, quality growth, SMEs, science, technology, innovation, technology, anti-corruption, healthcare, response to urgent cases, structural reform, and economic integration. On this occasion, delegates will accelerate the implementation of long-term programs and plans in key areas towards realization of specific priorities in APEC 2017 and long-term goals of APEC on trade liberalization and investment. The Ministry of Health will chair seven meetings on health-related issues during the third Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM3) and related meetings scheduled for August 18-30 in Ho Chi Minh City, said an official from the ministry.  Nguyen Manh Cuong, Deputy Director of the Health Ministry’s International Cooperation Department, said at a press conference in Hanoi on August 11 that the meetings will approve relevant strategies and policies in the APEC region as well as action plans of special working groups.  Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien will preside over the seventh High-Level Meeting on Health and Economy slated for August 23-28, he said, adding that the event is expected to help promote Vietnam’s initiative in inclusive economic, financial and social development through the building of a sustainable financial system in public health care and a roadmap that provides all people with health services.  The meeting is projected to issue a joint declaration and recommendations which will be sent to the APEC Finance Ministers’ Meeting and the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in November 2017 in the central city of Da Nang, Cuong said. At the talks (Source: VNA) Washington D.C. (VNA) – Defence Minister, Gen. Ngo Xuan Lich held talks with US Secretary of Defence James Mattis in Washington D.C. on August 8 following a welcome ceremony the same day.  Lich, who is on US visit from August 7-10, said Vietnam considers the US one of the top important partners and always prioritises developing bilateral ties based on the principles of equality, respect for political regime, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of each country. He spoke highly of the US’s collaboration with the Vietnamese coast guards in law enforcement at sea as well as in the United Nations peacekeeping mission. The two officials hailed the outcomes of bilateral ties on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding on promoting defence links and the Declaration on the Joint Vision on bilateral defence ties covering the exchange of all-level delegations, training, dialogue consultation, maritime security, search and rescue, bomb and mines clearance, Agent Orange/dioxin detoxification, and United Nations peacekeeping activities. They agreed to reinforce coordination under signed agreements, with priority given to post-war recovery efforts in Vietnam, response to non-traditional security challenges and the UN peacekeeping activities. About dioxin clean-up in contaminated areas, Lich said the two sides have concluded the first stage of the Da Nang airport remediation project and are embarking on the second stage to serve the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit 2017.
