SEA Games 29: Archer Chu Duc Anh wins gold for Vietnam

NDO – After the first two gold medals won by the wushu competitors Duong Thuy Vi and Hoang Thi Phuong Giang in the morning of August 20, archer Chu Duc Anh excelled in claiming the third gold medal for Vietnamese sports delegation at the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia. >>> Wushu martial artists bring home first two golds As expected, Duc Anh defeated host’s athlete Khairul Anuar Mohamad 6-2 in the men’s one-string bow archery event to earn the first gold medal for the Vietnamese archery team in this year’s SEA Games. The team won two silvers and one bronze in previous competitions. Previously, Anh performed extremely well as he defeated another host player Muhammad Akmal Nor Hasrin with the score of 6-2 in the semi-final to reach the final match. Duc Anh is the only Vietnamese archer presenting in the semi-finals of the men's and women's singles. His teammate, Loc Thi Dao, who won the gold medal in the women’s one-string bow at the Asian event in March, lost in the quarterfinals. The hope for additional medals is still in the hearts of Vietnamese archers as in the next two days they will play doubles and mixed one-string bow events. NDO – The 2017 ASEAN Song, Dance and Music Festival kicked off at Vinh Phuc provincial theatre, on August 20, as part of the activities to celebrate the 50th founding anniversary of ASEAN. The festival features nearly 300 artists from seven ASEAN member states, including Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The artists will present around 90 performances highlighting each nation’s culture. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Vuong Duy Bien stated that the event will help tighten solidarity between nations in the ASEAN Community and promotes each nation’s culture. Within the framework of the event, outstanding performances will be selected to entertain audience in Vinh Tuong district and Phuc Yen town. The festival will last until August 24, aiming to improve people’s knowledge of the ASEAN Community and increase their awareness of developing the community. Entrance to the festival is free. The highlight of the festival will be a contest called “Hoa đang Ninh Kieu hoi tu và toa sang” (Ninh Kieu lanterns shine brightly together) with the participation of travel associations and businesses. Nearly 40 lanterns made by leading local artisans are being displayed along Khai Luong canal while many main streets of the city are decorated with colourful flowers and lights. There are also displays of fresh vegetables and Ninh Kieu’s traditional dishes; an exhibition entitled “Ninh Kieu – Can Tho, old and new” featuring calligraphy, paintings, photographs and portraits; don ca tai tu (Southern folk music) performed on a river; a Vietnamese boat race; and other traditional games. The show was designed to mark the 72nd anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day of Vietnam. The play “Benh Si” by Luu Quang Vu will be performed for three nights in the Czech Republic. The first night drew nearly 500 people. The next two, in Brno and Ostava, are expected to lure similar crowds. It stars actors Xuan Bac, Phu Don, Viet Thang and actress Ho Lien. Taking place in a rural village in the north, the play is about a commune chairman and his officers, who are ordinary and good-natured people. However, they begin to consider themselves ‘noble’, and start to seek glory. Ridiculousness occurs happen when the officials’ good natures cannot change to adapt to their new lives. Luu Quang Vu wrote more than 50 plays. Most of them criticize the dark side of society, especially focusing on corruption and authoritarian behavior. Thanh won a bronze medal at the previous games in Singapore in 2015. She is currently a national record holder with a time of 2:45:9. Also on August 19, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien, accompanied by Vietnamese Ambassador to Malaysia Le Quy Quynh, visited the Vietnamese sport delegation at Berjaya Times Squares Hotel. The minister said that Vietnamese athletes should promote the images of Vietnam and its people, while fostering solidarity and friendship with ASEAN countries. Previously, on July 26 and 27, workers of Hao Hung Limited Company discovered ceramic, terracotta and wooden fragments flowing in pipes while they were dredging water passages to construct the harbour in Dung Quat Sea Area. Initial investigations revealed that it was a 20-30 metre long ship. It was discovered at about six to seven metres off the coast and about nine-metres deep in the sand near Tuyet Diem 3 Village in Binh Thuan Commune. The sunken ship contains many ceramic objects like bowls and dishes, which is assumed to date back to Minh Dynasty in 16th century by specialists.
