Top Vietnamese female swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien will compete in 10-12 categories with the aim of earning 8-10 gold medals at the upcoming 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, according to Dinh Viet Hung, general secretary of the Vietnam Aquatic Sports Association (VASA). “We will adjust Vien’s competition categories when the Games begin. It depends on the schedule and real situation. The tournament rules allow us to reduce the competition categories of athletes, not increase them,” said Hung. At the 28th Games held in Singapore two years ago, Vien registered for 19 events. However, she only participated in 13 events to focus on her favourite races. Vien, 20, took home eight gold, one silver and one bronze medal to become one of the best performers at the 28th Games, behind only Singapore’s Joseph Isaac Schooling, who claimed gold in all nine disciplines he participated in. To prepare for the Games, Vien took part in the recent FINA World Swimming Championships in Hungary but didn’t perform well. She failed in the qualifying round of her strong categories – the women’s 400m medley and 200m medley. However, Hung said Vien and the other Vietnamese swimmers will not be focusing on the poor result. “Vien’s goal is the Games in Malaysia,” said Hung. “It is not easy to win gold medals in a tournament which has high competition such as the regional sport event. Coach Hoang Anh Tuan and Vien will have to calculate carefully to partake in the chosen divisions, not affecting physical…... [read more]

Each element helps define quan họ, give it life and meaning, and the resulting harmony is so much more than just a beautiful song. Source VNA ... [read more]

(AFP/HECTOR RETAMAL) The 25-year-old Barcelona forward was travelling back from China and had earlier posted a video on social media apparently from Dubai airport, amid suggestions that he could have been bound for Paris. He has remained silent while rumours swirl that he will join the French club, who are reportedly ready to pay the €222 million (US$260 million) buyout clause in his contract at the Camp Nou. Neymar, who was in Shanghai on Monday fulfilling a sponsor's engagement, had also posted a photo on Instagram with the caption in Portuguese: "Lunch at half-way". In another video posted from an aeroplane, Neymar joked around with an image messaging app that superimposed a Spanish flag and a small plane on his tee-shirt - suggesting he was indeed headed home to Barcelona. The decor in that video was identifiable as from an Emirates aeroplane. Earlier reports claimed that he was headed from China to Doha to meet PSG's Qatari owners and pass a medical before a world-record transfer. MIAMI: David Beckham is "at the finish line" in his quest to obtain approval for a Major League Soccer expansion club in Miami, MLS commissioner Don Garber told the Miami Herald. Former English footballer David Beckham's Miami soccer expansion bid is on the agenda at an MLS owners meeting on Wednesday in Chicago AFP/Glyn KIRK Beckham's expansion bid is on the agenda at an MLS owners meeting on Wednesday in Chicago. They could vote to approve the deal and end a saga of more than 3 1/2 years during which Beckham has struggled to find a stadium site and secure the land for a venue to house the team his signing with the league in 2007 allowed him to own at a discounted rate of $25 million. "We are at the finish line after nine years of work to be sure, if we go to Miami, we get it right," Garber told the Herald on Tuesday. "David had an option, but that option couldn't be exercised without having him satisfy all the things that all team owners need to satisfy -? the right capital structure with his partners, the right stadium plan, the right marketing and business plans -- and we're at that point where I think we are getting ready to make the decisions internally to go forward." Garber did not say he expected full approval of the deal on Wednesday,…... [read more]

Seed-stage financing has been sliding for the last two years, with the number of transactions down about 40 percent since the peak in mid-2015, data show. Dollar investments in fledgling companies have also declined, although less dramatically, dropping more than 24 percent over the same period. The slowdown comes despite an explosion of interest by wealthy individuals and foreign investors looking to park money in the next big thing. And it has potentially big implications for Silicon Valley. Early-stage funding is the lifeblood of a technology ecosystem built on risk-taking. Denied critical resources in infancy, companies can't hope to scale quickly enough to unseat incumbent industries and grow into the next Uber Technologies Inc or Airbnb. "The reason why startups are disrupting companies in the 21st Century is not because they are smarter. It's because they have capital to do so," said Steve Blank, a serial entrepreneur, startup mentor and adjunct professor at Stanford University. Early-stage investors, known in Silicon Valley vernacular as seed and angel investors, often act as farm teams do in sports. They provide the first significant money and mentoring to help entrepreneurs prove their technology and hit milestones needed to attract even bigger investments from venture capitalists later on. But the zeal that prevailed just two years ago has faded. Seed and angel investors completed about 900 deals in the second quarter, down from roughly 1,100 deals in the second quarter of 2016 and close to 1,500 deals during that time period in 2015, according…...
