VN respects development of strategical partnership ties with Thailand

An official welcome ceremony for Vietnamese President Mr. Tran Dai Quang and his wife was solemnly celebrated at Presidential Palace Istana on August 29, at the invitation of Singaporean President Tony Tan Keng Yam. Boosting cooperation in all fields Singaporean president Tony Tan Keng Yam believed that this visit will contribute rising strategic partnership relations between Vietnam and Singapore. Both sides expressed their pleasure at the growth and development of bilateral relation since Vietnam and Singapore officially established strategic partnership ties in 2013. However, two sides affirmed that Vietnam and Singapore unanimously need to increase exchange programs for high- ranking delegation in various fields. USAID's official visit to Da Nang City Denise Rollins, Acting Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Asia of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), paid a working visit to the central city of Da Nang on September 9. Upon inspecting the dioxin detoxification project at Da Nang Airport, she praised the pace of the project's implementation and the cooperation of Vietnamese relevant agencies. Launched earlier this year, as a joint effort of Vietnam and US, the project aims to detoxicate about 80,000 cubic metres of dioxin-contaminated soil and mud. Da Nang Airport is referred to as a dioxin hot spot, together with several other sites in other provinces including Bien Hoa Airport in the southern province of Dong Nai. The vice director also visited Da Nang Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Hospital and met with partners in the private sector. Vietnam joins UN Convention against Torture Ambassador Le Hoai Trung, head of Vietnam's Permanent Representative Mission to the United Nations, signed the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment in New York on November 7. The convention is an international human rights document that prevents torture and enhances communications to raise public awareness and develop mechanisms for protecting victims and increasing international cooperation in the field. Ambassador Trung noted the signing of the convention shows the Vietnamese State's strong commitment to preventing torture and ill-treatment to better fundamental human rights. The signing is Vietnam's concrete step towards its pro-active international integration, affirming Vietnam is an active and responsible member of the international community, he said. He said the joining of the convention will help Vietnam perfect its legal system to promote its citizens' fundamental human rights. The UN Convention against Torture has been ratified by 154 nations since it was approved by the UN General Assembly in December 1984. TV audiences demand more creativity: PM Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung yesterday (Oct 28) called on Vietnamese broadcasters to move forward with innovation, creativity, and integrate with the rest of the region to meet the increasing demands of the public in the new era. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 50th General Assembly of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union held in Ha Noi yesterday, Dung said the explosive boom of information technology has allowed viewers more freedom but also posed major challenges to the industry. "I believe that the theme of this meeting, which focuses on serving viewers, would allow policy-makers and experts to develop better co-operative solutions and contribute to the maintenance of security and peace in the region," he said. The ABU 50th General Assembly meeting opened yesterday, attracting representatives from 150 broadcasting stations from 54 countries and territories. Members of ABU cover about 3.5 billion viewers worldwide. Tran Binh Minh, president of VTV, said broadcasters have to adapt to the changing tastes of viewers, especially young people who rely heavily on the internet and social networks as their entertainment channels, to provide more interactive programmes.
