Tours to the Mekong Delta, including Can Tho- Chau Doc- Ha Tien and Can Tho-Bac Lieu- Soc Trang, and to Da Lat City in the Central Highlands are also popular. Low-cost tours on offer The number of tours booked during this year’s National Day holiday is much lower than that recorded in the same period of 2013, despite a plethora of bargain basement holiday specials on offer from tour operators. Some of the larger tour operators report that tourists are choosing domestic tours to Con Dao, Phu Quoc and destinations in the central region, or short tours to Southeast Asian countries in lieu of outbound tours, which historically have been favoured during the National Day holiday. Road tours to Da Lat city in the Central Highlands or to the beautiful beaches in Phan Thiet and Nha Trang are at the top of tourists’ list, apart from some venues in the north-western region, which are opting for more scenic tours through the infamous terraced rice fields. On National Day alone, 63 traffic accidents were recorded across the country, leaving 48 dead and 75 injured. Notably, a tragic accident happened in the northern mountain province of Lao Cai on September 1, killing 12 people on a sleeper bus. The bus, with 53 people on board, plunged into a 200-metre ravine at about 7pm in Tong Sanh Village, Bat Xat District. Eleven passengers were killed at the scene and another died on the way to a hospital nearby. Meanwhile, a coach crashed into a car on National Highway 5 on September 2 in the northern province of Hung Yen, leaving three people dead. Among the deaths was Lieutenant-General Nguyen Xuan Tu, Deputy Director of the Public Security Ministry's General Department of Force Build-Up.
