A flag-hoisting ceremony marking the official operation of two Vietnamese warfare ships was performed on Tuesday at Cam Ranh Military Port in Khanh Hoa, a coastal province in south-central Vietnam. The two Gepard 3.9 frigates, which Vietnam commissioned Russia to produce, are 015-Tran Hung Dao and 016-Quang Trung, named after a revered military commander and emperor in Vietnamese history. Brigade No.162, under the supervision of Naval Region 4, is the Vietnam People's Navy’s biggest water-surface combat unit, with multiple state-of-the-art warships in its fleet. The young soldiers of Brigade 162 are charged with the command of a squadron of advanced warships, including two Gepard-class 3.9 frigates, the first of their kind in Vietnam; the missile escort vessels Dinh Tien Hoang and Ly Thai To; Molniya-class fast-attack missile ships; and the Vietnamese-built TT-400TP gunboats. The Vietnam People's Navy will soon get their hands on two new Gepard-class 3.9 frigates, the third and fourth of their kind which Russia has built for the Southeast Asian country, as the shipbuilder has just completed them, government website chinhphu.vn reported, quoting Russian media. Sputnik quoted Rafi Fatychow, spokesman for the Zelenodolsk shipyard, as saying last week. Indian warship INS Airavat docked at the central region's military port in Nha Trang Tuesday, starting a ten-day visit to Vietnam. The captain and crew of the aircraft carrier will meet with leaders of Khanh Hoa Province government and offer flowers at the statute of Tran Hung Dao, the Supreme Commander who led Vietnam to victory in the Battle of Bach Dang in 1288 over the naval fleet of China's Yuan Dynasty, the Tien Phong said in a report Wednesday. Japan said Tuesday that it had successfully shot down a ballistic missile over the Pacific as part of joint efforts with the United States to erect a shield against possible attacks from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
