Wochenendausflug

Hallo,

... did you have a great weekend... with 20 degrees and more... BBQ... Icecream? You did? How lucky you are... you're welcome... but I must admit we would have been pleased having all of this, too. Somehow our country between the seas was excluded from the general pre-summer in Germany. You don't believe me? Well, I'll show you - these photos were taken yesterday and not last autumn, taken by Birgit (who thought of taking the camera this time - who said you can't teach tricks anymore to an old dog or to an old Birgit... eh... where was I... oh yes...) at the beach of Schönberg at the Baltic Sea. And we had quite a storm and big waves, have a look:

As always on that kind of trips to the sea my good friend Plums accompanied us (Plums  was made by our friend Tinchen from "Tapsi's Bärenhöhle").

A good windblowing through the fur... *giggle* We were soon looking for a windsafe place, Plums and me. And even such a bad weather offers some advantages, we managed to find an empty "Strandkorb" (Don't know how they're called in English, Strand = beach, korb = basket).

*zwinker*
This was a comfy place, only the strawberry-sundae was missing... *wink*

Birgit made some more snapshots in the meantime, for example this one:

When they bloom in our garden she calls them weed! *teehee* But in general she thinks dandelion is beautiful, especially when enchanting the fresh springtime meadows with yellow dots. And this flower blooming in the sand was noticed with respect by Birgit. A little aside from the beach we found this weather station, we really like those because they're so funny.

(Stone wet --> rain / stone white --> snow / stone moving --> storm / stone invisible - mist / stone dry --> sunshine / stone fallen down --> earthquake / two stones visible --> weather ok, viewer too much alcohol)

Much more reliable than the weatherforecast on tv, don't you think so too? ;O)

Kaffeeklatsch (Nr. 96)

Hallo,

... today the "Kaffeeklatsch"-mug goes on tour... In our chronological presentation of BiWuBears it's now time for the three bearys who were the first BiWuBears ever leaving their home. The three live with Birgits aunts, and we were having a fotoshooting at their place. Today it starts with Bruni, who was given away as a birthday present for Birgits aunt in honor Brunhilde - who in fact absolutely dislikes being called Bruni herself. *smile* And if you're asking yourself now what an aunt in honor may be - Brunhilde lives with Birgit's aunt Kirsten in some kind of a widow community... and according to Birgit there's no difference to her real aunt.

*zwinker*
We hope you're having loads of fun later on at a comfy Sundayafternoon-"Kaffeeklatsch" with one, two cups of Sundayafternooncoffee and one, two, three, four pieces of tasty Sundayafternooncake. And we're wishing you a great week, too - many people in Germany will have an XL-weekend because May 1st is an official holiday and they're taking a day off from work tomorrow. We Bearys have more luck in general - for us it's always Sunday, maybe that's the reason why we're always in a sunny mood... *wink*

Post aus Bella Italia

Hallo,

A few days ago we've won the fantastic giveaway hosted by our dear friend Rosanna (who swore everything was correct with the draw *smile*). Rosanna gave away on her blogs La Stanza di Giuggiola and La Casa Rossa playing cards with lovely illustrations of "Ot en Sien", a child's book well known in the Netherlands with drawings by Cornelis Jetses.

*grins*
Now the awaited mail from Genoa arrived - the packaging was almost too pretty for opening, but there was no other way, somehow you got to get trough to the contents... *grin*

And here they are, the lovely cards with their beautiful old-fashioned motives. So many possibilities to use those fantastic illustrations, especially for greeting cards in Birgit's opinion.

Dear Rosanna, thank you very much for drawing us out of the luckpot and sending this beautiful price to us! We really love those gorgeous cards!

Euch allen wünsche ich ein tolles Wochenende!
Have a great weekend!

Moon Knight - Where Do We Go Now?

Moon Knight - Where Do We Go Now?

Moon Knight can't seem to catch a break.  Marvel's street level anti-hero has always had a decent fanbase, but Marc Spector apparently can't hold his ground with Marvel.  Over the past few years, The Fist of Khonshu has had no luck with keeping a strong ongoing.

The fantastic 2006 series brought the hero back in an extremely dark and powerful way.  He was at the bottom and readers religiously followed the stories of Marc's increasingly difficult life.  This bleak period in his life spawned 30 issues (plus a special and an annual) before coming to an end with the entertaining stories "The Death of Marc Spector" and "Down South."

Marc would return with his own title in 2009, Vengeance of Moon Knight.  This had a promising start, sporting a heavily armored Marc with a renewed sense of justice.  He came back to New York in the Dark Reign infested world and was looking to make a difference.  But, a man can only do so much with just 10 issues.

For the latest take on the character, we have Moon Knight by the immensely popular writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev (cue raving about their take on Daredevil).  This run brought some huge changes to Marc.  He left his entire supporting cast behind in New York and traveled to Hollywood where he wanted to become a producer.  His mental well-being and case of multiple personality disorder went off the deep-end.  He was no longer restricted to being just Marc, Jake, Steven, and Moon Knight - he was now hallucinating and trying to be other Avengers.  But, with drastic change comes mixed results.  Lasting only 12 issues, this series received some pretty solid reviews.  However, a good chunk of Moon Knight fans (based on my conversations across multiple forums) weren't happy with such a massive change to the character.

You try to change the character too much and a good deal of the long-time fans protest... but if you try to do more of the same, it never seems to work.  So where do we go now with Moon Knight?  Is he simply a character that'll never stick, or is there a formula that can boost him to A-list status?  As a Moon Knight fanboy, I feel obligated to weigh in and share what I'd love to see for the character next time around.

-The Creative Team-
Moon Knight needs to strike a great blend of dark action and a strong connection to his supporting characters.  We know he can be more violent than the traditional hero, but we need a cast that'll evoke our emotions and make us give a damn about what's going on in his life.  Personally, I think Mike Benson (second half of the '06 run, Deadpool: Suicide Kings), Rick Remender (Venom, Uncanny X-Force), Christopher Yost (Scarlet Spider, X-Force) or Ed Brubaker (Captain America, Daredevil) would all be excellent picks and they could create exceptional Moon Knight stories.  As for the art, Mike Deodato Jr. or David Finch are without question the top picks.  Ryan Stegman has been absolutely delivering with Scarlet Spider, so he'd also be a great fit, too.

-The Character-
We've seen Marc at his worst (Civil War era) and we've seen him at his craziest (recent run), so how about we give the man's emotional scars a break and focus on returning him to a place inspired by his classic era (a la Dan Slott & Amazing Spider-Man).  He's once again loyal to Khonshu and a full moon increases his strength. But unlike recent events, this time around the God (who is real) doesn't call for Marc to create a body count... but instead demands for Marc to spread fear and respect for his deity.  This takes away the conflict he has with his agenda because that's something we've seen too many times before.  That story feels like it's on loop at this point and it would be nice to see a clear minded and focused Moon Knight doing what he does best: knocking out villains.

When it comes to his multiple personality disorder, I say throw the whole thing out the window.  He was never truly that crazy (before the current run, of course); he created Jake and Steven for tactical reasons.  Jake was around to obtain information at a lower level, and Steven was there to get high level information and pose as a front for how he obtained his wealth (which was done through his years as a mercenary).  The different personalities would sometimes suggest different things, but he was always able to take full control (best displayed in West Coast Avengers).  While I applaud Bendis' effort to bring new dynamics to the character, giving no solid explanation for the big change wasn't overlooked by many and I feel as though it was banking on most believing the stereotype that Marc is indeed bonkers.  After boosting the craziness in Hollywood, I say have him return to New York with a clear mind and finally realizes he doesn't need the personalities.  In the end, he's simply a hero, and his real personality (Marc Spector) proved that a long time ago in Egypt by doing everything he could to stop Bushman.  Casting aside these personal issues we've seen time and time again will allow the writer to provide a heavier focus on the supporting cast (Marlene, Frenchie, etc) and greater plots surrounding villains posing the real threat instead of his own emotions.

-The Villains-
His rogues gallery is in dire need of the New 52 treatment.  Many haven't been seen in awhile and others just aren't exciting.  Bushman is his main foe, but at the end of the day he brings nothing special to the table.  He gave Marc a deliciously brutal fight in Vengeance, but aside from that, the guy was never that big of an obstacle.  When we last saw the villain he was losing his mind, so it might be interesting to see Bushman be the man to fill the title's crazy quota.  Seeing the likes of Morpheus and Deadzone return would be most welcome, and, dare I say it, find a way to give him an equivalent of the Sinister Six.  If these villains with an agenda against Moony aren't stacking up individually, have this crazy Bushman unite them. Ultimately, Mr. Spector simply needs bigger adversaries with bigger agendas.  In my opinion this will be one of many critical elements for his success.

-Increase His Role-
Moon Knight has a rich history of interacting with a lot of characters, but as of late he hasn't really done anything of any importance in the 616 Universe. This should change if you want more people interested in him and having him fill the role of "supporting character #7" on a team book likely isn't going to cut it.  Giving him more respect and time in the spotlight among the superhero community will hopefully lead to more readers being curious about the character.  As much as I dislike forced cameos, make an effort to have him a part of the world he's in. New York is packed with characters and it shouldn't be uncommon for him to be bumping shoulders and appearing in other titles.

Are these suggestions something you'd like to see in Moon Knight's next title or do you have something else in mind for the anti-hero?  Or, do you think it's finally time for Moon Knight to just call it quits and spend a few years in limbo?  Feel free to speak your mind in the comments section below!

Weihnachten im April?

Hallo,

also langsam komme ich wirklich ins Grübeln, ob unser Kalender überhaupt stimmt.
... I really begin to wonder if our calendar is showing the right date. I'm receiving so many presents during the last days that I'm really wondering if it's christmas season again or if maybe my birthday is earlier this year... *giggle* Well, getting presents is always fun, and surprise presents multiply the fun.

Yes, we received another surprise-parcel - we're having so many nice friends everywhere, that's really stunning! This parcel made its way from the Netherlands and we spotted the senders immediately: Our friends Margriet and E-beertje! Well, opening this parcel was a very quick job - and this is what I found inside:

Ooops... einmal umdrehen!
Ooops... gotta turn it around!

Nun stimmt's - dann wollen wir mal schauen!
Now it's right - let's have a look!

Hey, ein Swimmingpool für's Flatterbärchen - cool!
Hey, a swimmigpool for the flutterybeary - cool!

Nope, of course those two didn't mail me a swimmingpool *grin*, inside were the treasures Margriet and E-beertje sent us. A lovely card from my buddy E-beertje, ahhh, so nice! And a lot of goodies for Birgit were included, she will think easily of many purposes for those.

But this was only the beginning, because those two critters were brought to daylight next:

Birgit is really excited owning one of Margriet's selfmade cages now - although this is kind of temporary, as soon as Magica de Spell will spot this froggiecage it will go in the witch tower... *grin* And this little bunny was made by Margriet's talented friend Nella - to us it's a miracle how anybody can be able to knit so tiny. But that wasn't still everything:

I have to be careful not to wake up that little bear... psssst... so on it goes, this still wasn't all:

Did you ever see such a cute caterpillar before? Just to make sure I asked her if she eats strawberryleaves, puuuuh, I'm lucky, she doesn't - so I may take her to my garden. But there's still one left:

A little brother of E-beertje - how cool is that??? And after looking up what strawberry means in dutch, it occured to me my new buddy can only be named Aardbei-beertje or A-beertje, that's for sure.

Margriet and E-beertje wrote to us, those little fellows were in need of a new home and they had thought of us in an instant. For sure, those tiny folk will have a loving home around here, promised! And knowing Margriet made all those treasures by herself (except for the bunny) and decided together with E-beertje to send them to us makes them really precious for us!

Dearies, we don't know what we've done to deserve this  - but we're so happy with all these treasures that we barely can find words. You spoiled us rotten! Thank you very, very much!!!

To all of you a great Friday and a good start into the weekend!

Mekong River and Rai Saeng Arun ...

The heat has been oppressive lately and yesterday was no exception.  Still my wife thought it might be nice to take a drive along the Mekong River.  From our house we headed Northeast along the mountains toward Chiang Khong, then we stuck to the river all the way to a small resort called Rai Saeng Arun, a drive of 78 km.

It is not the best time of year for sightseeing but still it was a pleasant drive with my wife at the wheel.  The resort was deserted and their gardens were not at their peak but I took a few photos anyway.  They grow their own strawberries so we had fresh strawberry smoothies before we left.

People look to be developing small scenic rest stops along the river and we stopped at one to use their facilities and take some pictures on our way to  Rai Saeng Arun.  There was even a quaint riverside beach far below the vantage point.  That is Laos on the other side of the river.

Anyway, this is a day for pictures, not for writing.

A theme party

The other day I threw a small party - just for the guys I hung out with in my M.Sc Physics class.

The first visitor was early. Very early.
"Look! I have found a way to solve the Bangalore traffic problem. It's an Eureka moment." He said with excitement as he came in.
"You should stop thinking while you take bath. Here! wear some clothes." I chided Archimedes.
He did and promptly forgot the cute idea he had come up with.
"Jee! How could I forget it? Let me think." He said and Poof! he became Rene Descartes. I had to drive him out because the party was not for french models.

Newton called up and said that he would not be able to make it because he had to go to hospital. Apparently he wasn't happy with the tenth decimal place of Gravitational constant. So he had gone and sat under a jack fruit tree for inspiration to strike and now he was all bloody.
"Does that mean I can call Einstein?" I asked him. But he hung up. He didn't like Einstein much.
Actually none of us liked Einstein very much. He wasn't bright and didn't understand quantum mechanics. But he was very funny. He could come up with witty one liners like, 'God does not play cricket.'

Then Rutherford came. He had balls of steel and was acting kinda crazy. He would throw the balls in air so that they collided with each other and then he would measure their speeds after collision.
"Alpha particles scattered just like that in my experiment. What could that mean?" He kept asking.

The first quantum physicst to come to the party was Schrodinger's cat. I was given to understand that it had locked schrodinger in a box for a food experiment. I asked the cat whether I could keep the Nobel prize if schrodinger died of the poisonous gas. It meowed. I think that meant Yes. But it just could be a meow too.

Then rest of the quantum guys came in waves and pieces. But Heisenberg wasn't with them. They were uncertain on who was supposed to pick him up. They started arguing among themselves. Soon it escalated to a fight and everybody started throwing Rutherford's balls around.

Eventually everybody quietened down and the lights were switched off for the item number by Marie curie. A glowing human outline danced in the dark. She had a fabulous skeleton.
"This is cool. My parents never allowed me to see an x-ray movie." Bose was very thrilled.
"You are so thin! Is it Atkin's diet?" People asked her.
"No! It is the Radioactive stuff I am working with." She shouted above the music.
A hush fell over the room.

Everybody left abruptly.

Irrgarten

Hallo,

... have you ever visited a labyrinth? It's supposed to be quite funny, at least Birgit says so, she told me she had loads of fun visiting them when she was a child - well, I decided to have a try myself...

Okay, let's see... hmmm... left or right... that's the question...

* Viel später*
*Much later*

Da geht's nicht weiter, also hier lang. *schluck*)
Well, somehow... that fun factor didn't occure to me so far... I'm trodding around here for almost an eternity! Here's a deadend, so this way round. (And btw - don't those walls look much older in the meantime... what's going on around here? Did I stay in here too long? *pant*)

*Noch viel später*
*Much more later*

Hilfe... Biiiiiiiiiiirgiiiiiiiiit!!!!!!!!!!
*Censoredexpressions* That's too weird, I don't find the way out. I'm hungry, I'm tired and I'm frightened! Honestly... those walls got mossy in the meantime. Is this the Twilight Zone? Help... Biiiiiiiiiirgiiiiiiit!!!!!!!

*Clearshisthroat* Okay, okay, Birgit was just saying in the background I could as  well stop playing the blog's clown, because a) noone would ever believe me I wouldn't be able to find my way out of this labyrinth because I could simply flutter out and b) noone woud everever believe me that the four walls of my cottage garden would make an invincible labyrinth. *giggle* I admit it, it was just a little joke to show you what Birgit did with my garden walls in the meantime. I really like them this grungy way - I hope they're going to be placed soon!

Gartengäste

Hallo,

Birgit is working on my cottage garden at the moment, on the garden wall to be exact - and that's nothing that I can show you, so I decided to introduce those two to you:

*zwinker*
Aren't they sweet, those two? Birgit bought them for me and my garden from Nicky Cooper... I'm so delighted with my two little garden companions. Nevertheless I have my paws full now, they like to cuddle all the time and are absolutely crazy for nuts. But therefore I even like them more - it would have been a tragedy if this tiny folk would have been crazy for strawberries... *wink*

But Birgit wouldn't be Birgit if she would make a purchase at Nicky's and only a squirrel and a chipmunk would hop out of the parcel! Of course there had to be magical creatures finding their way to us, a gremlin and two new dragons!

It's getting crowded in the witch tower, that's for sure - where shall they all find their bit of space? Well, I suppose Birgit knows what she's doing... anyway, Nicky generously gave us some gifts, too - have a look:

How do I look like as King Fluby? My first decree as a king would be of course: Strawberries for everyone and everybody! *grin* But I think I'm not the reigning type, I prefer staying the blogbeary I am - because one gets nice presents and doesn't have to wear a heavy crown on his head, that's quite annoying. Last week I got mail from Spain, sent from dear Eva, but inside were presents from my dear friend Sans! - just for me!

*kicher*
This little box was supposed to be given to me when Sans! visited us, but her suitcase had swallowed it, in Barcelona it was spotted again. Now Eva sent it to us in Sans! order - great, it's always gorgeous when the nice attentions never stop! *giggle*

Dear Ladies - thank you once again from the bottom of my beary heart!

A whole bunch of sweet and strawberry stuff - just for me! Yes, I am the happiest flutterybeary in the whole while world - which is wishing you a great week! ;O)

Anonymity and Blogging ...

Replying to a comment about anonymous blogging, I soon realized the subject deserved something more than a throwaway answer in the comments section.  I have been busy and distracted by other things but the idea for this post continued to linger on the periphery of my thoughts until now.

I began this blog five years ago, with a good dose of trepidation.  Who would I be, what would I write about, would I enjoy it, would I be any good at it and how would people respond to what I wrote?  Perhaps there would be lynch mobs sent to track me down or hackers trying to steal my identity.  I struggled with finding a nom de plume that I felt comfortable with, something representative of who I was becoming not who I was.

I began writing under the name Village Farang and eventually registered the .com.  Gradually Village Farang spread across the breadth of social media and I now prefer using VF to my real name. In time I developed a voice and became confident in my own ability to deal with a range of commenters, both supporters and detractors.  Righty or wrongly I surmised that I would be okay as long as I did not include personal and identifying information about myself or others.

Like others, I had read articles about identity theft and wanted to err on the side of caution.  Then one day it struck me that I have a cousin with the same first and last name, who is a public figure in the form of a regional anchor on a rightwing news station.  It could be argued I suppose, that being on the more pugnacious, authoritarian and mainstream side of our societal divide is safer for him.  Yet his name and face are on the airwaves and the internet without any ill effects for him or his family that I know of.  Perhaps I was just being paranoid.

Slowly people living in Chiang Rai or the surrounding area began to contact me.  Reluctantly at first I began to meet people and let them merge the name with a face.  One colorful character, who was among the first, later enjoyed displaying his breadth of knowledge by outing me at public gatherings where we were both in attendance.  I ended up having mixed emotions about those outbursts.

Over time it became a losing battle, trying to remain anonymous.  People knew my face and formed an opinion of me either through what they read or the person they met.  Which one came first appeared to have some bearing on that opinion, I observed with interest.  In time pictures found their way to the blog.

Now I am quite comfortable with who I am and don’t mind people knowing that I am VF.  It is not like I am ashamed of anything I post.  I fear anonymity often serves no greater purpose than to embolden those who wish to inflict suffering upon others.  I have come to view Village Farang as a nickname or descriptive handle that relates more of who I am than my given name.

One benefit of being recognized as VF is exemplified by a chance encounter the other day.  The wife and I drove into town to run some errands.  Nothing urgent, more like excuses for us to make the drive.  After three stops we ended up at what I call the Mall.  We had a wonderful lunch at Fuji, making a point of trying new things on the menu.  Afterwards we went to Starbucks, me for coffee and my wife for some dessert.  Standing in line a gentleman approached with a warm and generous smile on his face.  He introduced himself with his online name and volunteered positive remarks about my blog.  Of course I knew instantly who he was and remembered past correspondence we had shared on a forum we are both members of.

After exchanging brief pleasantries, I carried my tray out into Starbuck’s mall seating area to find my wife.  As luck would have it the gentleman’s wife was seated at the next table, so when he returned with their drinks we pushed our tables together to facilitate conversation.  A good Thai friend of ours also happened by so we made room for him as well.  It was one of those lovely spontaneous encounters that I enjoy so much and something that would not have happened without VF’s help.

While it is regrettable that some individuals have developed an unfavorable image of VF, I feel it often has more to do with their own demons or a difference of opinion than anything of real substance.  Beside there are very few of them.  So now I find it hard to disguise my joy and satisfaction when I am recognized as VF, facilitating contact with a wider breadth of humanity.  I am glad to be out of the blogger closet of anonymity.

door chimes ring so soft
greetings from my dr. wu
gives a hug and kiss

treatment is prepared
on the table where I lay
healing music plays

heat lamp warmth soaks in
who knew with needles poking
into bliss I’d drift!?

Photos from Today’s Mt. Bike Ride ...

I was going to write something today but by the time I returned from another mountain bike ride my body and brain were just too tired to think.  Decided it might be best just to upload some pictures from my ride and leave the heavy lifting for a later date.

Today marked only the second time on this dirt track and the first time to return home the long way via the main road we normally use when returning from town.  It gave me a chance to stop along the way, something one just doesn’t do when commuting, and get some more photos of the roadside trees that bloom this time of year.

Up in the hills the aftermath of recent burning was evident even after the strong winds and brief rain we had last night.  Spotted a couple of guys driving their small tractors on a very steep slope that was recently cleared.  They obviously had the presence of mind to keep the tires pointed straight up and down the slope.  If they had gotten sideways I am sure they would have flipped.  Found one guy tending his newly planted eggplants and took a couple of pictures as he looked a little out of place with his plastic sheets.

So here is a selection of photos from today’s ride.
