Exhibition “Games and Realities” to open in Hanoi this week

In a recent interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency, Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh said the meeting will assess the profound impact of the regional and international situation on national security and development. It will also examine the diplomatic sector’s achievements and its weaknesses in implementing foreign policy following the 10th National Party Congress, draw lessons and put forward new policies in the coming time. In doing so, the diplomats will thoroughly discuss advantages and challenges for the country as well as the role and tasks of the sector during the new stage of development. They will focus on such important matters as promoting diplomacy in the fields of politics, economics and culture, as well as in mobilising Vietnamese nationals and protecting their rights and interests abroad. Deputy Minister Minh affirmed that over the past 20 years of implementing the Doi Moi (Renewal) process, Vietnam’s position and strength have been heightened, the economy has been developing dynamically and the country’s prestige has been growing in the international arena. He attributed the achievements to the prompt and concrete instructions by the Party and State leaders and the support by the people as well as to efforts made by proficient diplomats. However, Mr Minh pointed out that the country remains underdeveloped, with poor infrastructure that make it lag behind other countries in many aspects, including diplomacy. There are rapid and complicated changes in the region and the world that require Vietnamese diplomats to become sharper in forecasting what’s on the…... [read more]

The vegetarian meals prepared by Venerable Thich Dam Anh are famous not only for what’s on the menu but also for the care with which the food is prepared. A life devoted to vegetarian food The Venerable became a vegetarian when he was only 14 months old. He started to prepare vegetarian meals at the age of 14. So far he has created more than 400 vegetarian recipes with ingredients commonly used by ordinary people. At other pagodas, meals are often prepared by Buddhist nuns and followers. But at Phung Thanh pagoda, all the meals are prepared by Venerable Thich Dam Anh himself. To prepare for a meal, the Venerable goes to Bac Qua market to choose the fresh vegetables and fruits he needs. Food preparation starts at 3am so the meal will be ready to serve when the sun rises – the best, purest moment of the day. Any meal prepared by the Venerable has all the same courses as any non-vegetarian meal prepared during Tet. For example, barbequed eels, stewed chicken, fish soup and stewed pig’s trotters are among the common courses. But ingredients for them are bean sprouts, green beans, mushrooms, rice paper and pomelo peels. One of the many specialities prepared by the Venerable is loach fish cooked with soy sauce. The loaches are made from water taro stalks. Another course prepared by the Venerable is mushroom rice soup – an indispensable course in any meal at a pagoda. Viet Nam News By Dr. Catherine Gonzalez* It's the New Year and guess what's on (almost) everyone's minds: Losing weight and dropping some of the kilograms they put on, especially during the holiday season. Most people think they will lose weight when they come to Việt Nam. And why not? A typical Vietnamese person is quite slim. But for many expats in Việt Nam, a combination of factors can often build up to a surprising weight gain. For those working in Việt Nam, business lunches including large amounts of food and alcohol can be the norm. Even Vietnamese people are beginning to get heavier because of increasing wealth and eating out more frequently. Many expats think Vietnamese food is an excellent "diet" because meals include many vegetables. But beware! The fried green vegetables can have as much fat as french fries. On top of eating too much, chances are that you spend a lot of time sitting in meetings or on the computer, or riding in a car or on motorbike through the endless traffic and bumpy roads. Or perhaps you are too busy with work. You don't feel like venturing out into the hustle and bustle of Hà Nội after a long working day. It's easier to buy packaged foods and cook things that are familiar in the comfort of your home. Unfortunately, in many countries, the fast foods we enjoy are not always the healthiest choices, nor best for the waistline and Việt Nam is not an exception.…... [read more]
