The foreign-invested sector contributed $298 million, up 24.82 per cent, while $150 million came from the private sector, up 21.61 per cent. The United States continued to be the largest purchaser, accounting for 40 per cent of the province’s export revenue. Along with traditional markets such as China, the European Union, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, local products have also been shipped to Cambodia, India, Slovakia and Sri Lanka. The export value registered a year-on-year surge of 17.47 per cent for industrial processed products, and 35.79 per cent for agro-forestry-fishery products. Notably, the export of aquatic products has doubled to $35.25 million, up 24.78 per cent against 2016. Leading Thua Thien Hue’s textile market, Hue Textile and Garment Joint Stock Company earned VND1.57 trillion ($69 billion) in revenue and its export turnover was $85 million. The average monthly income of its employees is VND7.3 million per person. The central province of Thua Thien-Hue heaped praise on runner Tran Thi Yen Hoa and karate artist Le Minh Thuan.  Yen Hoa brought home a gold medal in the women’s 4x100m relay and another in women’s 100m hurdle race.    Minh Thuan and his team earn the gold medal in the men’s kumite team event. The northern province of Ninh Binh presented certificates of merit and cash gifts to its seven athletes who joined the national team at SEA Games 29.  Among the Ninh Binh athletes, Vu Thi Ly earned a gold medal in the women’s 800m race and a silver in the women’s 1,500m.  Three karate artists – Giang Viet Anh, Giang Thanh Huy and Nguyen Anh Dung – helped Vietnam get the bronze medal in the men’s team kata event.  Meanwhile, Giang Van Duc and Nguyen Xuan Thanh are members of the men’s volley ball team which came home with a bronze medal.  Vietnam won a total of 58 gold, 50 silver and 60 bronze medals to stay at the third place in overall rankings of the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, which concluded on August 30. NDO – Various breeds were released into the maritime environment in Thua Thien-Hue province on August 31, aimed at restoring the aquatic resources and rehabilitating the fisheries sector for the four central provinces affected by the Formosa maritime environmental incident last year. The move, initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) in collaboration with the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and Thua Thien-Hue provincial People's Committee, also affirmed that the sea is safe and aquatic resources have begun their revival, stated MARD Deputy Minister Vu Van Tam at the launch. It is also the first step among a variety of activities by the fisheries sector in strengthening and rehabilitating fisheries resources for the four provinces in the central region, as well as others suffering from the incident. Tam urged the relevant organisations, individuals and Buddhist followers to contribute to the rehabilitation of fisheries resources, in the time ahead, towards the goal of protecting the ecological environment and biodiversity. He also asked that the fishermen not use explosives, poisons, electrical sparks or illegal fishing gear. According to Vice Chairman of Thua Thien-Hue People's Committee Nguyen Van Phuong, as soon as the marine environmental incident occurred, the authorities have directed local coastal branches and districts to check and calculate damages, while implementing compensation packages and providing support for local people in order to restore production and ensure social security.   At the ceremony (Photo: VNA) Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – The Hue Relics Preservation Centre and the Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper held a ceremony in the ancient city of Hue on August 29 to receive holy earth from Truong Sa archipelago to mix into “Xa Tac” platform. The ritual, Te Xa Tac (Worshipping Genies of Earth and Crop), performed on the Xa Tac Platform in the former royal capital of Hue, is one of the most important rituals conducted by kings under Vietnam’s feudal dynasties to pray for peace and bumper harvests.  The Xa Tac Platform was built in 1806 under the reign of King Gia Long (the first king of the Nguyen dynasty). The contemporary court ordered provinces across the country to select clean and solid earth for making the platform in Hue to symbolise national unity. The platform itself stands for the country as a whole. Photo: The filming has been organized by the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in cooperation with the Hanatour Service Corporation, one of the largest South Korean travel companies, to introduce the beauty and cultural heritage of Thua Thien Hue to the South Korean public. The video is being filmed at the UNESCO World Heritage’s the Hue Citadel, the Khai Dinh Tomb, the Huong River, with its charming natural scenery, and at exhibitions of ao dai (Vietnam’s traditional dress). The crew also filmed neighboring Da Nang and Quang Nam province. The video is an opportunity for the local tourism sector to promote tourism in the central region to attract more international tourists, especially South Koreans. South Korea topped the list of foreign visitors to Thua Thien Hue in the first half of this year, with over 97,000, accounting for 26 per cent of the total of 414,500, which was up 6.76 per cent year-on-year.  Acknowledging the increasing number of South Korean visitors, local investors and enterprises are paying greater attention to upgrading My An and Thanh Tan hot springs, which is a popular spot among South Korean and Japanese tourists. The event was held by Tuoi Tre Newspaper and the provincial Youth Union in Hue city. The scholarships were worth a total 727 million VND (32,000 USD) this year, ranging from 7 – 10 million VND (308 – 404 USD) each, said acting editor-in-chief of Tuoi Tre Newspaper Le The Chu, adding that they were donated by individuals and the province’s Association for Promoting Education. During the visit, many Indonesian firms and investors expressed their big interest in Vietnam’s market Last Wednesday afternoon, Samal Abdul Nasir Bamadhaj – director of Indonesia’s Intra Asia Indonesia – came to the storied Raffles hotel in  Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on coal trading and seaport investment with Vietnam’s Hong Phat Group. The document, signed during Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s official visit to Indonesia last week, would enable the Indonesian firm to build a $1 billion coal port in Vietnam. “I feel very happy about the signing of the MoU. It is very important to us as it will be the prerequisite for us to co-operate with Hong Phat, and we will realise it very soon,” Bamadhaj told VIR. The port, with a designed capacity of about 15-20 million tonnes of coal per year, will be largely used for cargo and logistics to serve export and import activities between Indonesia and Vietnam, especially coal. Le Van Truoc, head of the villagers, said the team includes 10 members for alternate shifts, ensuring the whole day is monitored. Truoc said villagers had mobilised cash to buy the team an engine boat to drive the sand miners away from the local river section. The team also built a bamboo tent as a shelter for members during their shift. “We help discover illegal sand mining activities and sound the alarm for all villagers. In case the miners ignore us, we will sail to the site to drive them away,” Truoc said.
