Thousands of units of blood have been collected during the events in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Dong Nai, and Yen Bai. Nearly 700 blood units were donated by over 1,500 volunteers during the eighth “Red Sunday” 2018 at Hong Duc University in the central province of Thanh Hoa. The same day, in Vinh city of neighbouring Nghe An province, the event was responded to by more than 1,000 officials and youth union members with close to 1,000 blood units expected to be collected during the day. One day earlier, hundreds of youth union members and young people in the southern province of Dong Nai donated in excess of 360 blood units. This was the second time the “Red Sunday” had been held in the locality. Also on January 13, the “Red Sunday” attracted 500 students in the northern province of Yen Bai, collecting 160 blood units, which was transported to the National Institute for Hematology and Blood Transfusion in Hanoi for the needy. In 2018, 33 localities have registered to respond to event with an estimated 35,000 blood units.After nine years from 2008-2017, the “Red Sunday” collected more than 70,000 blood units.
Addressing the launching ceremony in Hanoi, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh cited the health ministry’s data that since the campaign kick-started in January 1994, donors have currently provided 98 percent of the blood collected.In 2016, the country collected nearly 1.2 million blood units, which were equivalent to 75 percent of blood demand for surgery, treatment and provision nationwide, he noted. On June 30 morning, Nhon Trach district in collaboration with Dong Nai Red Cross held a day for blood donation, which was participated by people from the whole district. Health agents in charge of getting blood came from various hospitals, clinics and medical units across the province. In spite of difficulties in blood preservation and transportation as well as the geographical distance from the city, the blood donation session had finished within the morning, as previously planned. Nhan Dan - The fifth 'Red Sunday' blood drive was held at the Vietnam National University in Hanoi and Thai Nguyen University on January 20. More than 1,400 young people donated over 1,000 blood units during this year's event.
