Vietnamese authorities are expected to finalize the prosecution and trial of 21 serious cases of corruption and economic misconduct in 2018, the Vietnam News Agency has reported. The 13th session of the Central Steering Committee on Corruption Prevention and Control, chaired by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong, was held in Hanoi on Monday. Speaking at the gathering, General Secretary Trong said that the fight against corruption should be intensified this year, with “higher determination, perseverance and efficiency.” The Vietnamese Party chief hailed anti-corruption efforts in 2017, which he claimed had made a “good impression and strengthened public trust.” “Court trials have become more transparent, democratic, and in accordance with the current law. The sentences have been strict yet very humane,” Trong said. Party chief of Vietnam Nong Duc Manh will pay an official visit to Japan in the near term at the invitation of Prime Minister Taro Aso, the Communist Party of Vietnam's Central Committee's external relation bureau said on April 13. General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), Nong Duc Manh, will pay an official visit to Australia and New Zealand soon, the CPV Central Committee's Commission for External Relations announced September 3. Party Chief Manh will make his tour at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key. The announcement, however, gave no details of Manh's trip. The leader of Vietnam's Communist Party is to visit South Korea next week, the Vietnam News Agency said Thursday. The agency said that Communist Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh would visit Seoul from November 14-16, the first party chief to visit in 12 years.
