The 68th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and China was celebrated by the Embassy of Vietnam in China in Beijing on January 18. In his speech, Vietnamese Ambassador to China Dang Minh Khoi said as close neighbouring countries, both Vietnam and China desire to maintain a stable and peaceful environment to boost innovation and the cause of national construction. Vietnam always regards the development of friendship and cooperation with China as one of the top priorities in its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, diversification and multilateralisation of international relations, he said while highlighting the bilateral traditional friendship founded by late Presidents Ho Chi Minh and Mao Zedong and nurtured by the two countries’ generations of leaders. He cited China’s statistics that two-way trade soared by 23.4% to US$121.3 billion last year. The two nations are good partners within the framework of regional and global multilateral cooperation such as ASEAN-China, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum, and the United Nations (UN). China’s Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Chen Xiaodong for his par,affirmed his nation’s readiness to realize common perceptions reached by Vietnamese and Chinese leaders with a focus on strengthening exchanges and the bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

Economic ministers of ten ASEAN member countries and China on August 15 inked an investment agreement that is expected to bring in trade and investment expansion among the two sides. The agreement is another step to closer economic ties between the Southeast Asian countries with China as it, together with already-signed China-ASEAN agreements of the trade in goods and services, completed the negotiation process of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (FTA). Vietnam on November 5 protested against a Chinese agency's map that violates Vietnamese sovereignty in the East Sea.
