HCM City People’s Court has blocked Uber B.V’s legal action against the municipal Taxation Department. Le Thi Thu Huong, vice head of the HCM City Taxation Department, cited the court as saying that the lawsuit was sent to the court late October last year. However, the letter of attorney granted by Uber B.V to Uber Vietnam in 2016 did not allow Uber Vietnam to represent its parent company in lawsuits. So, the lawsuit was blocked from proceeding further. Uber B.V. filed a complaint with the General Department of Taxation and the Ministry of Finance (MoF) on the grounds that it had fulfilled its tax obligations under the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement signed between Vietnam and the Netherlands. But the MoF said Uber B.V. is not entitled to tax exemption under the agreement since it generates its income in Vietnam through a network of local partner drivers. The tax department then asked five banks – Vietcombank, Eximbank, Sacombank, ACB, and VietinBank – to appropriate fares paid to Uber through bank accounts and send them instead to Uber International Holding B.V. Energy usage is expected to reduce by 20 per cent after the Energy Management Centre came into operation on Friday in HCM City. The centre's equipment and devices have been donated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). A court in Ho Chi Minh City has dismissed a lawsuit against the city’s tax department by Uber after the ride-hailing firm asked the court to stop the department from charging it with a million-dollar sum of tax. The total number of accounts with sale activities via social networks and websites that the Hanoi and HCM City taxation agencies have shortlisted is 27,000. HCM City’s Department of Transport has proposed to the city’s authority to begin the operation of electric buses to transport tourists from wharfs to hotels or tourism sites. The department suggested that the project be implemented on a trial basis from this month. The move is aimed at promoting waterway transport via eco-friendly vehicles and reducing traffic congestion.
