Greater efforts demanded to promote forest protection

NDO – The agencies concerned should make greater efforts to promote forest protection, in association with socio-economic development and the improvement of the people’s standard of living. The statement was made by Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung at a meeting held by the State Steering Committee on Forest Sustainable Development Target Programme in the 2016-2020 period (Programme 886), in Hanoi, on January 25. The Deputy PM highlighted that urgent measures are required including protecting existing forest areas, increasing forest coverage, conserving biodiversity and nature, and improving the competitiveness of forest products. It is crucial to improve the institutions, mechanisms and policies related to forest protection and development, particularly in terms of forest planning and restructuring, he added. Deputy PM Dung also requested the close control and strict handling of violations of forest protection regulations; the renovation of forestry production; the development of products; and brand building. He asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to coordinate with the relevant ministries and agencies to successfully execute Programme 886 and the National Action Programme on Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions. The Ministry of Planning and Investment needs to review ODA projects for the forestry industry as well as sourcing investment capital for Programme 886.
