GSO: Export and import enterprises growing sharply The number of enterprises involved in export and import activities has increased sharply since 2012, according to the preliminary results of the 2017 Economic Census conducted by the General Statistics Office (GSO). Figures from the Census and the General Department of Customs show that the number of enterprises operating in purely processing activities (the import of raw materials from foreign orders and the export of finished products) stood at almost 4,200, primarily in the textile and garment industry. Vietnam had more than 10,000 large-sized import and export enterprises as at January 1, 2017, up 29 per cent since 2012 and accounting for 1.9 per cent of all enterprises. Medium-sized enterprises increased 23.6 per cent in number, while small-sized enterprises increased 21.2 per cent and micro-enterprises 65.5 per cent, accounting for 74 per cent of the total. Notably, small and medium-sized enterprises increased 6 percentage points compared to 2012. Employee numbers fell 0.8 percentage points, indicating that the size of enterprises was smaller, according to the report. The number of enterprises operating in export and import activities as at January 1, 2017 was about 63,000, an increase of… [Read full story]
