Lao PM begins trip to Myanmar

Illustrative photo (Source: Crossed Flag Pins) Hanoi (VNA) – Lao Prime Minister ThonglounSisoulith began his official visit to Myanmar on January 15 at the invitationof Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw.This is the first visit of a Lao leader to Myanmar since thevisit made by President Bounnhang Vorachith in August 2016.In the 2016 visit, both sides agreed to jointly manage theirfirst friendship bridge spanning the Mekong River, which was inaugurated in May2015. They were also committed to boosting bilateral engagements in ruraldevelopment, tourism, poverty alleviation, education, forestry, and animalfarming.Sharing a 230-km borderline, Laos and Myanmar established diplomaticrelations in July 1955, with both countries joining the ASEAN in 1997. They have worked to crack down on drug trafficking rings andwill expand cooperation in law-making.-VNA
