Newly-built sidewalks to welcome APEC in Da Nang break after three months

A number of sidewalks upgraded to welcome APEC delegates in Da Nang in November 2017 are now in a decayed state just after three months in use.  Da Nang hosted the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week from November 6 to 11, with the participation of tens of thousands of delegates, including U.S. President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. A few infrastructure improvement plans had been in consideration for Son Tra and its vicinity since 2016, most notably the reconstruction and refurbishment of avenues and sidewalks leading to the meeting venue, to welcome the delegates. An investment of more than VND240 billion (US$10.5 million) was put forth to restore the sidewalks, including governmental, municipal, and local funding. The execution of the plan was monitored by a management board and completed a month before the summit took place. After just a few months in use, the sidewalks show signs of deterioration.
