Hundreds of thousands of Indonesians were ordered to evacuate Friday after a volcano on the main island of Java erupted spectacularly, hurling red hot ash and rocks over a huge distance. Nearly 1,700 villagers on Sumatra Island have been forced to flee their homes as the local authorities declared a seven-day emergency after Mount Sinabung erupted twice on November 3. Food, masks, sanitation kits and other relief aid have been delivered to the scene, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the National Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency said. As many as 1,306 people are taking refuge due to the eruption of Mount Merapi in Indonesia's Yogyakarta province, detikcom online news quoted a regent as saying on Tuesday. "As last night, there were 1,306 people taking refuge in emergency shelters," said the province's Sleman Regent Sri Purnomo in his report to Vice President Boediono. According to Purnomo, there are three sub districts locating in Merapi slope where its people must be evacuated.
