A civilian has died in a collision between a traffic police motorbike and a motorcyclist during a high-speed pursuit in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. The fatal accident occurred on Friday night as two traffic police officers were chasing down traffic violators in Chau Thanh District, Ben Tre Province, Colonel Pham Van Ngot, chief of staff of the provincial Department of Police, confirmed on Saturday. According to initial information, a team of traffic police officers was carrying out a patrol along the streets in Huu Dinh Commune when they spotted two men on a motorbike, who were showing signs of traffic violations. As the law enforcers signaled the vehicle to pull over, the two ignored and sped up. Senior Lieutenant N.V.S. and another officer got on their motorcycle to pursue the suspects. The high-speed chase lasted for over a kilometer before the motorbike, which was steered by Senior Lt. S., slammed into a motorcycle ridden by Nguyen Van Binh on a section of National Highway 6 in Son Dong Commune. The collision caused Binh, 40, to die on the spot, while the two traffic cops were hospitalized for emergency treatment. The traffic violators managed to escape. The health conditions of the two officers have stabilized, Col. Ngot said, adding that the provincial police department has opened an investigation into the case. 19-year-old Kevin Pham, a young Vietnamese man, suffered numerous stab wounds in an apartment in Mississauga, Canada, outside of Toronto, on December 28, 2011, and later died in hospital, police reported. A Vietnamese man died in an arson incident aboard a Korean fishing boat in South Africa Saturday night local time (early Sunday Vietnamese time), local officials said. Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, spokesperson of Cape Town disaster risk management center, said in a News24 report that the victim Ho Xuan Tung, 29, was found burnt beyond recognition on the Hwa-Tsan, then docked near shore. He said 25 other crew members, coming from several Asian countries including China, Taiwan, South Korea and Vietnam were rescued. Canadian police are tracking down a Vietnamese man suspected of involvement in money laundering activities who they say may have already fled to Vietnam. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Cong Dinh, 26, has been charged with "laundering the proceeds of crime and possession of the proceeds of crime," Canadian daily newspaper Ottawa Citizen reported Wednesday. The charges stem from a cross-border investigation by Canadian authorities into a Vietnamese organized-crime group which is said to have laundered about US$2.7 million earned from the smuggling of cocaine and ecstasy. The dead victim was identified as Le Thi Chau, born in 1988 in the central province of Nghe An. She was hit by a truck while she was crossing the road at around 5.30am on Dec. 22. A crane truck crashed into a tree on the street in north central Vietnam Tuesday, causing a broken branch to hit and kill a man. Vo Huy Duc, 61, was killed on the spot as he was standing around 5 meters from the truck in Nghe An Province. The truck weighing around 15 tons suddenly moved back and hit the tree, uprooting it.
