Vietnamese man killed in crash during traffic police pursuit

A civilian has died in a collision between a traffic police motorbike and a motorcyclist during a high-speed pursuit in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. The fatal accident occurred on Friday night as two traffic police officers were chasing down traffic violators in Chau Thanh District, Ben Tre Province, Colonel Pham Van Ngot, chief of staff of the provincial Department of Police, confirmed on Saturday. According to initial information, a team of traffic police officers was carrying out a patrol along the streets in Huu Dinh Commune when they spotted two men on a motorbike, who were showing signs of traffic violations. As the law enforcers signaled the vehicle to pull over, the two ignored and sped up. Senior Lieutenant N.V.S. and another officer got on their motorcycle to pursue the suspects. The high-speed chase lasted for over a kilometer before the motorbike, which was steered by Senior Lt. S., slammed into a motorcycle ridden by Nguyen Van Binh on a section of National Highway 6 in Son Dong Commune. The collision caused Binh, 40, to die on the spot, while the two traffic cops were hospitalized for emergency treatment. The traffic violators managed to escape. The health conditions of the two officers have stabilized, Col. Ngot said, adding that the provincial police department has opened an investigation into the case.
