Painter An was born in March 20, 1923 in Son Tay town. He is the son of Phan Ke Toai, who is a senior mandarin and the former Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam. He studied the École des Beaux Arts de l’Indochine – now Vietnam University of Fine Art, No.42 Yet Kieu Street, Hanoi. During the resistance war against the French colonists, painter An participated in the activities of the Viet Bac war zone, which is present-day Thai Nguyen province. His famous painting Nho Mot Chieu Tay Bac (Recalling One Later Afternoon in Tay Bac) has caused many people to explore the beautiful mountains where soldiers were once stationed. Especially, painter An was the first painter to portray President Ho Chi Minh in 1948 in the Viet Bac war zone and had about 20 works on President Ho Chi Minh. He has also won a number of art prizes, including the Government’s 2001 Noble Medal. A homage ceremony for the veteran painter will be held from 7.30 am to 8.45 am on January 23 at the National Funeral House, No 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street. On the same day, his funeral will take place in Son Tay town, Hanoi.
Vietnamese heroic mother Tran Thi Viet, who was recognised as the country's oldest living person by Vietnam Guinness Book of Records, passed away on June 18, lived to be 119 years old. Painter Luu Cong Nhan, one of the big names in the world of Vietnamese fine art, passed away on July 21 in Da Lat city at the age of 76. Painter Luu Cong Nhan He left behind thousands of works of art, including watercolor, oil and do paper examples amongst many others. Professor Tran Van Giau, a famous educator and veteran revolutionary, passed away at the age of 100 in Ho Chi Minh City on December 16. Professor Tran Van Khe, the grand old master of Vietnamese traditional music passed away on June 24 in Gia Dinh Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City at the ripe old age of 94. In an announcement, the professor died at Gia Dinh People's Hospital after fighting for illnesses, including the lungs, heart and kidney, at the hospital since May 27.
