Vietnam traditional martial arts (Vovinam) will be an official sport at the upcoming ASEAN University Games. Vovinam which is practised by many students in ASEAN countries will be an official sport at the coming ASEAN University Games in Myanmar. – Photo discover-halong.com Southeast Asian Vovinam Federation Vice President Nguyễn Bình Định said that the University Games’ organisers agreed to add Vovinam as an event at the festival on Sunday. “We lobbied for Vovinam during a meeting with the organisers and representatives of different relevant bodies in Myanmar, the hosts of the Games. And it is a great news that they agreed with us,” Định was quoted as saying on the Thanh Niên. According to Định, one of the reasons that convinced the organisers was that Vovinam had been strongly developed in many countries in the region, such as Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia and Myanmar. Among the Vovinam trainees, many are students. As a result, Vovinam will be one of the 17 martial arts at the December Games. There will be 17 sets of medals available at the competition: 10 for performance and seven for combat events. The Southeast Asian Games in 2011 and 2103 included Vovinam. It was also a sport at the Asian Beach Games in 2016.

The games, which will be held in Chiang Mai,Thailand from December 15-23, is an excellent opportunity for Vietnamesestudents to enrich their life experience and improve sports in thecountry’s schools, said the Deputy Education and Training Minister TranQuang Quy at the ceremony. The 15 th ASEAN University Games (AUG 15) opened in Chiang Mai city, Thailand on Dec. 15. The Vietnamese team sent 157 athletes to the event to compete in track and field, pencak silat, football, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, karate and beach volleyball. Vietnamese students earned six gold and two silver medals on December 16 at the ongoing 17th ASEAN University Games (AUG 17) in Palembang, Indonesia. Vietnamese table tennis players carried off two golds in the women’s and men’s table tennis team events. In the track and field, Quach Thi Lan, Vu Thi Huong and Nguyen Thi Phuong bagged four gold medals in the women’s 100-, 400-, 5,000-m categories, respectively, while Nguyen Van Lai took a gold for the men’s 10,000-m category.
