Rice husks can be turned into energy (Photo: VNA) Soc Trang (VNA) – A consultation workshop onbiomass energy planning in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang by 2020, witha vision to 2030, was held in the province on January 25.The event was co-organised by the provincial Department ofIndustry and Trade and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). Deputy Director of the department Le Thach Thanh said SocTrang boasts huge advantages in agro-forestry development, which providessources of biomass energy. Biomass energy planning plays a significant role inpromoting the province’s efficient use of biomass sources for electricityproduction in combination with agricultural development and improvement of localpeople’s livelihoods.A biomass power plant of 12 MW using bagasse has been putinto operation in the province while three new thermo power plants and wind turbineswill be built in the coming time.At the workshop, consulting agencies introduced legalframework for biomass planning, along with methodology, procedures and results ofdrafting provincial-level biomass energy plans and lists of proposed projects. Participants also discussed regional biomass energy planning,cooperation between Soc Trang and other localities in tapping biomass energypotential, as well as environmental impacts and solutions to financial issues.-VNA
A Germany-Vietnam Day was held in the southern province of Soc Trang on December 11 to mark the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries. The prices of land in the crowded center of Soc Trang town in the southwestern province of Soc Trang are six to ten times higher than ten years ago, said a provincial land official recently. Economist credited the mounting land prices to the recent announcement of a provincial development plan that would turn the town into a class III city by 2006. Director of the provincial Department of Industry and Trade (DoIT) Vo Van Chieu briefed the delegates on the province’s socio-economic development, its real situation and potentials for biomass power development with the availability of sugarcane bagasse, rice husk, straw and wood.
In 2016, the Soc Trang sugar plant produced 130,000 tonnes of sugarcane bagasse which was enough to supply for a local thermo power plant.
