As most of its land is below sea level, the Netherlands faces a major challenge in terms of water management but it has been recognised as a country which is renowned for its implementation of water management initiatives. The Hanoitimes - On February 29, at the meeting with Chairman of the city’s People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong, Dutch Ambassador Nienke Trooster made a promise that the Netherlands is ready to share its experience in countering severe saltwater intrusion with Vietnam when the official voiced concern about challenges posed by climate change and salinity intrusion to Vietnam. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam and the Germany Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) officially launched a project supporting the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) in Vietnam. The project is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB). The project duration is four years (2014-2018) with a total budget of EUR4 million. The agreement was reached by donors at an informal mid-year consultative group meeting held in the Central Highland province of Dak Lak on June 7-8. The meeting brought together more than 300 delegates representing foreign embassies, foreign donor organisations and Vietnamese ministries and agencies.
