Photo: VGP The Vietnamese Government chief, who is in Laos to attend the 40th meeting of the Viet Nam-Laos Inter-Governmental Committee, highly valued the efforts of the Unitel, a trademark of the Star Telecom and a joint venture between Viet Nam’s Viettel Group and Laos’ Asia Telecom, to provide services covering up to 95% of Laos’ territory.PM Phuc suggested the Star Telecom to continue coordinating with Lao authorities in e-Government and scientific and technological development, thus contributing to socio-economic progress in the neighboring country. He also expressed thanks to Laos for its support and assistance to the Star Telecom to become a typical example of economic cooperation between the two countries. Unitel Director General Cao Anh Son said Unitel has been the largest telecom operator in Laos during the past seven consecutive years with 2.8 million customers, accounting for 52% of the market share in Laos. The Unitel has also helped create positive changes in Laos’ telecom sector as the number of Laotians accessing to mobile phones has risen significantly. The Vietnamese government has authorized the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industry Group (TKV) to set up joint stock companies with foreign partners to develop bauxite and aluminum mining projects, its website has said. According to www.chinhphu.vn, TKV must hold at least 51 percent of any joint venture, with foreign partners allowed to hold 40 percent and the remaining 9 percent offered to the public. Vietnam's first joint venture on providing internet broadband services based on Long Term Evolution or LTE technology was formed between the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) and Russian Alltech Group. The joint venture will provide internet broadband services based on LTE technology, having chartered capital of VND1.6 trillion ($84.2 million).
