A Vietnamese man has been captured for allegedly destroying forests in the Central Highlands. Phan Thanh Nghia, 52, the chief suspect for the offense, will face four months’ imprisonment, according to a decision by the police of Dak Glong District, Dak Nong Province. Nghia has purportedly damaged nearly 15 hectares of the forest under the control of a local company. On February 6, in the region under the management of the company, authorities found a number of people using chainsaws and machetes, setting fire and working the soil of a denuded area in which trees had been previously cut down. At the scene, forest rangers arrested five people: Phan Thanh Nghia; Y Tu, 21; Duong Van Thanh, 51; H’Je, 33; and Y Thieu Bon Dop, 34. Deforestation and narrowed forestry land is becoming an alarming problem in the Central Highlands region with 3,641 cases of forest law violations reported in the first six months of this year, according to the Steering Committee for the Central Highlands Region. Of the total, there were 93 cases of forestry land transgressions and cutting trees for farm land with 236 total hectares destroyed. Old growth forest in Ja Wam Hamlet, Ea Kiet Commune, Cu M'gar District, have been nearly destroyed by logging and fire. Some of these forests are now littered with sawdust of cut down trees, while others have completely disappeared. Loggers often use sophisticated tricks to evade rangers. And even if they are caught, they are simply fined ant released. Some rangers have even been assaulted. Recently three were attacked and injured near a local farm, apparently for revenge. During a conference on the protection and development of the forests in Gia Lai Province, it was revealed that the central highlands has lost approximately 130,000 hectares forest over the past five years.
