A huge fire consumed part of a market early on Tuesday in Vietnam’s southernmost province, killing two people. The blaze occurred at around 2:15 am at Cha La Market in Tran Phan Commune, Dam Doi District, Ca Mau Province, which is the southern tip of the country. At this time, people working at the place spotted flames from the nearby house of a 35-year-old man named Tra Thai Hoang, which rapidly spread to several neighboring buildings. Local firefighters and police instantly arrived at the scene. It took them about half an hour to extinguish the fire. Hoang and his wife died in the fire while four houses at the market have been completely destroyed, causing an estimated loss of VND4.8 billion (US$176,000). Nguyen Tien Hai, chairman of the Ca Mau People’s Committee, and other local governmental bodies have offered their condolences to the victims’ family, and given them VND25 million ($1,000) in urgent support. At least 23 tons of assorted fish were found dead in Dong Nai River in the province of the same name from Sunday to Tuesday, and industrial sewage could be the culprit, authorities have said. Fish raised in cages under rafts on the river have continued to die, the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment said Tuesday. A British tourist has been found dead in her hotel room in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City, police and state media reported Saturday. MacIntosh Minnia Anne Tweed was discovered in her room at the Majestic Hotel in the city center on Thursday, the Lao Dong (Labor) newspaper said, citing local police. It is unclear how she died and an investigation is underway, the paper reported. Illegal firecrackers kill 54, injure 11,440 over holidays The victims were relatives of the owner of the house, Tran Khac Nguyen, 37. They were Nguyen's wife who was seven-months pregnant, his expecting baby and his cousin Nguyen Van Quynh, 27. Seven women drowned after a boat carrying 42 people capsized in a river in the southeastern province of Binh Phuoc Wednesday. According to the provincial Coast Guard, the accident occurred at 3:50 p.m. when the old wooden vessel, which was carrying farmers returning home across the Mang River in Loc Ninh District, sprung a leak. Police in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang are investigating a case in which a man allegedly strangled his two daughters to death before committing suicide. Nguyen Xuan Binh, 31, and his daughters were found dead in their house in the town of Long Xuyen on Sunday.
